Tritons Finish Tournament of Champions With Pair of Wins

TURLOCK, Calif. – The University of California San Diego concluded the three-day Tournament of Champions with two victories over Concordia (Ore.) and Simon Fraser, Sunday at Pedretti Sports Complex. UC San Diego took down the Cavaliers by a final score of 8-4. UCSD walked-off the Clan to win 5-4 in its final game of the tournament.

The Tritons finished the tournament with a 4-2 record after splitting its games in the first and second days. UCSD finished 11th in the tournament standings, with Cal State Monterey Bay coming in first.

Sophomore Caitlyn Weisner was named to the All-Tournament Team.

With the wins, the Tritons are 19-17 overall. Concordia drops to 13-22 and SFU is 7-18.

“Today I was happy to see how well we competed,” said head coach Patti Gerckens. “Weisner came up big for us but in general we had two strong team wins”.

UCSD used five runs in the fifth inning to come from behind and seal the four-run victory.

The Cavaliers struck first, scoring in the top of the first inning on a throwing error by the Triton catcher.

Junior Ashley Chestnut made it across home plate on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning to knot the game at one.

UCSD took a lead it would not relinquish in the fifth inning, notching four runs. Sophomore Maddy Lewis got things started with an RBI single that scored junior Kendall Baker. Lewis made it to second on a single from junior Kelsi Maday and then stole third base. She made it across home plate when junior Lauren Sanders hit a single to right field. Weisner capped the inning with a big three-run home run over right field.

Concordia answered in the sixth inning scoring two runs to cut the lead, 6-3.

The Tritons added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a five-run advantage. Freshman Mikaila Reyes had two RBI to center field that scored Weisner and junior Rachel Phillips. The Cavaliers responded in the bottom of the inning when Madisen Oliver hit an RBI single, but it wasn’t enough as UCSD earned the 8-4 victory.

Weisner went two-for-three at the plate with two runs, three RBI and a home run. Lewis finished with two hits and an RBI and Reyes collected two RBI. The Tritons tallied five stolen bases with Maday grabbing two.

Sophomore Lauren Brown, senior Milana Casillas and freshman Lizzy Beutter split time in the circle for UCSD. Brown (7-7) earned the win after pitching 5.1 innings, striking out six batters and giving up two runs. Casillas allowed one run and three hits in one inning of work. Beutter threw the final two outs of the game.

Jessica Lambourn (3-7) was credited with the loss after giving up three runs in four innings of work.

Weisner had a two-run walk off double to give the Tritons a 5-4 win over SFU.

The Clan jumped out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the second inning.

In the fourth inning, UCSD notched three runs to come back and take a 3-2 lead. With the bases loaded, freshman Danica Kazakoff was hit by a pitch and scored freshman Alanna Phillips. Baker followed with a two RBI single that scored freshman Danielle Stedman and Weisner.

SFU knotted the game at three in the top of the sixth inning after Taylor Lundrigan made it home on a throwing error by the Triton catcher.

In the bottom of the inning, Lewis walked before stealing second base and advancing to third after Sanders hit a single through the left side. With two outs, Weisner had a walk-off double to score Lewis and Sanders.  

Weisner and Baker each had two RBI while Lewis tallied a stolen base.

In the circle, Beutter pitched 4.0 innings and gave up two earned runs. Brown came in relief of Beutter for 3.0 innings and was credited with the win. The Clans’ Alia Stachoski earned the loss after throwing a complete game and giving up five runs.

UCSD returns home to host Humboldt State April 7-8 for a four-game series. The doubleheader on Friday is set to start at 1 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m.
