LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 19th-ranked University of California San Diego women’s water polo team used a four-goal third quarter to come from behind and capture a 7-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer, Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Prior to the start of the contest, UC San Diego recognized six members of its senior class playing in their final regular-season home game.
With the win, UCSD improves to 16-14 overall. The Sagehens fall to 12-18.
Senior Lauren Boyer tallied two goals, one assist and three steals while classmate Alexis Wieseler had a goal, an assist and two steals. Sophomore Krista Schneider notched two goals, one assist and two steals. Senior Connie Wu added a goal. Freshman Reilly Gallagher made six saves in the cage.
For the Sagehens, Isabella Villa had a goal and an assist while goalkeeper Ahsha Earwood made six saves.
The Tritons outscored the visitors 5-2 in the second half to grab their second win of the weekend.
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board first, scoring three minutes into the first quarter. Wu had the Tritons’ first goal of the contest to tie it, 1-1.
The Sagehens scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter before Schneider connected with Wieseler for a goal to make it a 3-2 game at the half.
UCSD used four goals in the third frame to take a lead it would not relinquish. Junior Kayla Fedler got things started, scoring off a pass from Boyer. Thirty seconds later, Wieseler found Schneider for a goal to give the Tritons their first lead of the game. Boyer had an unassisted goal and scored on a penalty shot to round out the frame.
Gallagher assisted Schneider for UCSD’s final goal in the fourth quarter.
UCSD wraps up its regular season with a battle against crosstown rival San Diego State on Saturday, April 22, for the Harper Cup starting at 1 p.m.
