SAN RAMON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego produced a league-high 39 student-athletes named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Spring All-Academic as the conference announced its selections Friday.
To earn the honor, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 GPA or better, be at least a sophomore athletically, and have been an active member of a CCAA spring sport (baseball, men's golf, softball, track and field).
The UC San Diego women's track and field program contributed 15 Tritons to the list. Men's track and field had 11, baseball had six, softball had five and men's golf had two.
Twenty Tritons are repeat selections, including Merin Arft (track and field), Kendall Baker (softball), Casey Buck (track and field), Luis Carson (track and field), Jackie Chalmers (track and field), Mandy Che (track and field), Taylor Eljenholm (track and field), Justin Flatt (baseball), Khalil Flemister (track and field), Selena Friedman (track and field), Michaela King (track and field), Mateusz Kucz (golf), Cameron Kurz (baseball), Sam Ozenbaugh (track and field), Michael Palos (baseball), Kristin Semancsin (track and field), Tim Schmidt (track and field), Valerie Stark (track and field), Devin Stetson (track and field), and Joel Wermter (golf).
Chalmers, Eljenholm, Ozenbaugh, and Schmidt are now three-time awardees.
League-wide, 318 student-athletes were tabbed 2017 CCAA Spring All-Academic. UCSD's 39 honorees topped the 13-member contingent, just edging out Chico State's 38. Cal State San Marcos rounded out the top three with 29 picks.
It is the second-straight year that UC San Diego has led the CCAA in Spring All-Academic selections.
Also in 2016-17, UC San Diego had 33 student-athletes named CCAA Fall All-Academic as well as nine Winter All-Academic honorees, bringing the institution's yearly total to 81.
The CCAA's seasonal academic awards were created prior to the 2014-15 season. The conference will also select an overall All-Academic team later in the summer.
