UC San Diego Announced as 2017 USG NACDA Sustainability Award Winner
CLEVELAND - The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USG Corporation have announced the University of California San Diego as the winner of the third annual USG NACDA Sustainability Award. UC San Diego was chosen from a pool of three finalists and received the award for its work on the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center.
"We're deeply honored to receive the Sustainability Award,” said Earl Edwards, Director of Athletics at UC San Diego. “It underscores the commitment of Triton Athletics, in alignment with UC San Diego's mission, to envision and implement sustainable best practices within innovative performance facilities to accelerate world-class achievement."
The award was designed to recognize NACDA member institutions across all divisions, honoring athletics directors and their universities for incorporating sustainable practices and materials into their athletics facilities. A seven-person committee consisting of athletics directors across the country and representatives from USG and NACDA aided in selecting UC San Diego as this year's award winner.
UCSD will receive $40,000 in USG product as the winner of the Sustainability Award. The other two finalists, the University of Colorado and the University of Oregon, will win $10,000 each in USG product, for use toward any athletics or academic facility to recognize their sustainable efforts.
“Congratulations to UC San Diego for proving how great design can make an impact on its occupants, the surrounding area, and the environment for years to come," said Rik Master, FAIA, USG senior manager of sustainability. ”The USG NACDA Sustainability Award recognizes a university that is focused on providing a more sustainable future – a reflection of our own corporate commitment – to reducing the environmental impact of the built environment by manufacturing sustainable, efficient and eco-friendly products and solutions.”
“UC San Diego has taken impressive steps in terms of sustainable upgrades to its facilities,” said NACDA Executive Director, Bob Vecchione. “It is wonderful to see the success that UCSD student-athletes have been able to achieve with the help of the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center, and even better to witness the standard of sustainability for campuses of all sizes that has been set with this facility.”
With a series of capital improvement projects in support of transitioning to Division I, Triton Athletics not only met, but surpassed the baseline sustainability goals set by the University.
The Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center features state-of-the-art zones for strength, conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation. UCSD student-athletes have access to top-notch amenities in the Spanos Center including 15 Hammer Strength Power Racks, Keiser Functional Trainers, Tendo units, Wattbikes, a 12-person hydrotherapy pool and an AlterG (anti-gravity) Treadmill.
The Spanos Athletic Performance Center achieved LEED Gold Certification and low-emitting materials were used throughout. Sustainable features include but are not limited to: on-site storm water management that utilizes bio-swale retention systems; reduction in heat island effect achieved using light reflecting roofing and paving materials; water efficiency from low water use landscaping, drip irrigation and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
The Sustainability Award will officially be presented to UC San Diego at an on-campus event this fall.
