LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams each put together outstanding performances at the 25th annual Triton Classic on Saturday.

The No. 23-ranked men’s team won the 8K race with 34 total points, while the women’s team took second place in the 6K competition with 58 points, behind only No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona.

The Triton men were led by senior Garrett Lepine’s third-place individual finish with a time of 26-minutes, 29.4-seconds. In addition to Lepine, the Triton men also received strong individual performances from sophomore Timothy Corvese, freshman Elijah Horwitz as well as junior Garrett Boulais.

Corvese placed fifth with a time of 26:35.7, Horwitz finished sixth at 26:46.7 and Boulais was ninth with a time of 27:03.8.

Lepine now has four top-three team finishes this season, with three top-10 overall individual finishes. For Corvese, it was his first top-10 overall individual finish of the season, and the second time he placed in the top-two for the Tritons.

Meanwhile, the women’s team was paced by senior Ella Verhees’ first-place overall individual finish at 22:08.3.

For Verhees, the San Diego native has now recorded four-consecutive first-place team finishes for the Tritons, and has placed among the top two for UC San Diego in each of the five meets she has competed in this season. In addition, Verhees has earned top-10 individual finishes in three separate meets this season.

The Triton women also had a ninth-place overall individual finish by junior Karina Carstens (22:37.5), while senior Kristin Semancsin placed 10th overall with a time of 22:47.8. It was the second time this season Carstens has finished in the top-12, with Semancsin placing in the top-13 for the third time this year.

The Triton Classic concludes regular-season action for both the men’s and women’s teams, as UC San Diego will now turn its attention to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships on Oct. 21 in Turlock.
