Young Tritons Earn Singles Victories at Aztec Fall Invitational

SAN DIEGO — The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team resumed fall action this weekend at San Diego State’s Aztec Fall Invitational, as sophomore Marc Isaia and freshman Neil Tengbumroong each earned first-round singles victories in their respective brackets.

In first round action of the No. 1 singles flight, Isaia defeated Liberty’s Vince Salas, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Arnaud Restifo of SDSU, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Senior Justin Zhang fell to SDSU’s Ignacio Martinez in a first-round, three-set battle, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, while senior Eric Tseng also lost a tough first-round, three-set match to Valentin Lang of Grand Canyon, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Zachary Ermert earned a bye into the second round where he fell short in a three-set thriller against Alexandros Araouzos of USD, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

In the No. 2 singles flight, Tengbumroong earned a victory over GCU’s Leo Andreolli, 6-2, 6-4, before falling to SDSU’s Gonzalez in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Marius Ruh fell to Freddie Grant of GCU, 6-2, 6-1, sophomore Sreeganesh Manohara fell short against SDSU’s Rafael Gonzalez-Almazan, 6-3, 6-3, and freshman Naara Shin lost a close match to Garrett Kurtz of USD, 6-4, 6-4.

In the No. 2 singles consolation bracket, Ruh bounced back to defeat Liberty’s Max Borcuti, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to UC Irvine sophomore Bruce Man-Son-Hing in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-3. Shin fell to Liberty’s Alex Poynter, 6-2, 6-1.

In the No. 1 doubles flight action, Tseng and Zhang dropped its match to SDSU’s duo of David Hough and Jan Kirchhoff, 6-4, while UCSD’s duo of Isaia and Manohara lost a close match to SDSU’s Nicholas Mitchell and Sander Gjoels-Anderson, 7-6 (7-4).

The team of Isaia and Manohara lost its consolation bracket quarterfinal match against Liberty’s Poynter and Diego Castano, 6-2, and Zhang and Tseng eventually lost a hard-fought consolation bracket semifinal matchup to Poynter and Castano, 7-6 (7-3).

In No. 2 doubles flight play, senior Adrian Cordova and Shin lost a close match to Leo Andreolli and Justin Cvitanovic of GCU, 7-6 (7-5), Ermert and Ruh fell to SDSU’s Raul de La Torre and Rafael Gonzalez Almazan, 6-4, while sophomore David Higgins and Tengbumroong came up short against Mason Hanson and Sasha Krasnov of UC Irvine, 7-5.

UC San Diego resumes fall action at the SoCal Intercollegiate in Pasadena on Oct. 26.
