78 UC San Diego Student-Athletes Receive CCAA All-Academic Honors for 2016-17
Release: Tuesday 10/10/2017

SAN RAMON, Calif. - The University of California San Diego had 78 student-athletes named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic for 2016-17, the conference announced this week.

To qualify for CCAA All-Academic honors, student-athletes must be a varsity letter winner who competed in one of the 12 CCAA-sponsored sports (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball and softball) during the 2016-17 academic year.

In addition, student-athletes must achieve a grade-point average of 3.40 or higher in a minimum of 24 semester or 36 quarter units.

The UC San Diego women’s track and field program led the way for the fifth consecutive year with 19 student-athletes receiving the honor, including five dual-sport performers who also competed in cross country.

Men’s soccer was second with 10, men’s track and field had nine, and women’s soccer, women’s basketball and softball each had eight apiece.

UC San Diego finished second in the conference behind only Cal State San Marcos (96) for most student-athletes earning the accolades, after finishing first in each of the previous 11 years.

The CCAA also set a new benchmark as a whole in 2016-17 with a record 825 student athletes being recognized. It is a 14-percent increase from a year ago, as 10 of the conference’s 13 member institutions saw an increase.
