LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team extended its win streak to four matches Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory against conference opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills at RIMAC Arena. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-18, and 25-16.
UC San Diego is now 13-3 on the season and 7-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), sitting in first place in the league's South Division. It was also the fourth-consecutive sweep for the Tritons. CSUDH fell to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA.
The Tritons used a balanced offensive attack with four players finishing with six or more kills. The team hit .219 (35-14-96), which included a .318 (10-3-22) clip in the opening set. The Tritons sided-out at 64 percent compared to 44 percent for the Toros. They also totaled six service aces, three of those coming from sophomore libero Alyson Penrose, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had 12 errors from the service line.
Sophomore middle blocker Jessica Rieble posted match co-highs with 9.5 points and nine kills. Junior middle Micah Hammond and sophomore outside hitter each finished with eight kills, while senior outside Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) had six. Penrose led all players with 15 digs and sophomore setter Marie Paris had 28 assists.
The Toros hit just .089 (29-20-101), but did hold a 7-2 advantage in blocks. It was a season-low block total for the Tritons and just the fourth time in 16 matches that they had been out-blocked. Claire Autry led CSUDH offensively with nine kills.
At 4-4 in the first set, a kill by junior outside hitter Molly Dalziel kicked off a three-point run that put UC San Diego ahead for good. The Tritons later scored six-straight points to go up by a score of 22-12. Penrose had two of her aces during that stretch.
The second set was tied seven times, the last coming at 9-9. The Tritons then reeled off five-consecutive points, two of those coming off of Hammond put-aways. The Toros got back within two points at 17-15, but another five-point run by UCSD put the Tritons up 22-15.
UC San Diego was in front the entire way in the final frame after getting out to a 3-0 start. The Tritons led by 11 points at 18-7 when Cal State Dominguez Hills put together a six-point rally to come within five at 18-13. However, the Tritons scored seven of the set's final 10 points to earn the win.
UC San Diego hosts two more CCAA contests this week as it entertains Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Oct. 13, and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Oct. 14. Friday's match will be the fifth annual Reis Cup, named after former Triton Karen Reis, who passed away tragically in 2012. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena and UC San Diego students are admitted free.
