SAN DIEGO - University of California San Diego women’s soccer star Natalie Saddic was selected Thursday as a San Diego Hall of Champions (SDHOC) Star of the Month for November.
Saddic (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS), a redshirt sophomore, led the UC San Diego women's soccer program to a 4-0-1 mark during the month of November as the Tritons won a third straight and record 11th California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament title on Nov. 5, followed by a first West Region championship since 2012 on Nov. 17.
Starting at center back in all five matches and playing every minute, Saddic anchored the Triton defense to shutouts in two of those contests, and added the game-winning goal with 34 seconds left in regulation in a thrilling 4-3 triumph over then-23rd-ranked Sonoma State in the CCAA Tournament final on Nov. 5.
Saddic was named the CCAA Defensive Player of the Year on Nov. 2, the CCAA Tournament Most Valuable Defensive Player on Nov. 5, and a first-team United Soccer Coaches All-American on Nov. 29. Her Tritons were eliminated from the NCAA Championship in the national quarterfinals on Nov. 19 via penalty-kick tiebreaker after drawing 1-1 with No. 23 UC-Colorado Springs.
On Tuesday, the final United Soccer Coaches poll of the season was announced, with UC San Diego dropping two spots from No. 3, to No. 5.
Each month, the San Diego Hall of Champions honors as many as four professional, six amateur and six prep athletes as Stars of the Month for their outstanding athletic accomplishments. Stars of the Month are recognized in the San Diego Union-Tribune, via the Hall of Champions' app, social media channels and website, and at the 72nd Annual Salute to the Champions awards dinner. And, top-performing Stars of the Month will also earn Star of the Year accolades. Those considered are either from San Diego, or have achieved stardom for local teams.
