LA JOLLA, Calif. -The exhibition baseball game between No. 7 University of California San Diego and Hope International University on Friday night at Triton Ballpark was postponed by dense fog.
The game will be resumed, scoreless in the top of the third inning, on Saturday night, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m. Parking and admission will be free at Triton Ballpark on East Campus in La Jolla. Live stats will be available here, but no live video.
Friday's first fog delay was a mere minutes, shortly after the 6:01 p.m. first pitch. The second delay was over an hour in length, with the game officially postponed around 8:18 p.m., with Andrew Diaz on first base for Hope International following a one-out hit-by-pitch in the visitor third against redshirt junior right-hander Cameron Kurz (Encinitas/La Costa Canyon HS).
Earlier, with two gone in the bottom of the second after back-to-back called third strikes by HIU junior right-hander Kyle Carpenter, senior third baseman Justin Beck dropped a fog-affected triple around rightfielder Blake Ronca. Redshirt freshman second baseman Blake Baumgartner then drew a five-pitch walk, but Carpenter got redshirt junior catcher Michael Palos to pop out to end the threat.
Senior right-hander Mitch Hickey, a first-year transfer from Oregon State, started on the mound for UC San Diego and in his lone inning, struck out his first two batters looking. He was unable to handle a comebacker off the bat of Nolan Kraemer, with the Royal shortstop beating out Baumgartner's gathered throw for what was ruled an infield single. Hickey then got Lee Mutter swinging to strike out the side.
Junior left-hander Preston Mott turned in a 1-2-3 second with a flyout, called third strike and swinging strikeout.
