UC San Diego Defeats Saint Martin's, 3-2; Finishes Unbeaten and In Third Place at Desert Stinger Tournament
LAS VEGAS - The University of California San Diego softball team defeated Saint Martin’s, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon to finish unbeaten at the Desert Stinger Tournament this weekend.
Freshman Sherriah Harrington hit her second home run in as many days, while freshman pitcher Robyn Wampler recorded her fourth win of the young season after allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out six in five innings pitched.
Senior Kelsi Maday recorded an RBI and scored a run, sophomore Brittney Ross-Smith went 2-for-2 and senior Kendall Woken started the game in her collegiate pitching debut and threw the first two innings, allowing one run.
The Tritons (5-0) finished the three-day tournament at Majestic Park with a perfect 5-0 record. It marked a stellar debut at the ninth annual event hosted by MSU Billings. UC San Diego and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rivals Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino were the only three undefeated teams out of the 28 participants. Chico State (+30) won the tourney title based on a superior run differential, with the Tritons (+13) placing third behind the Coyotes (+25).
“It was a good weekend. A lot of good things happened,” said UC San Diego head coach Patti Gerckens. “The goal was to play well, and even though we didn’t play our best ball, we did very well.
“We grew a lot as a team and individually. It was really fantastic watching the team come together.”
The Tritons tied the score 1-1 in the third on Maday’s RBI groundout, and took the lead for good on Harrington’s one-out home run to left center after Maday’s leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth, to make it 3-2.
The freshman from Chula Vista finished the weekend 7-of-12 at the plate with two home runs and eight RBI, surprising even her coach in the process.
“The thought was to just give (Harrington) her opportunity and see what she would do,” said Gerckens. “I didn’t know she would play like this. She was very poised at the plate and didn’t look like a freshman.”
Harrington joined Ross-Smith and Wampler on the Desert Stinger Classic All-Tournament Team.
UC San Diego returns to action for its home and CCAA openers on Friday, Feb. 9, as the Tritons play host to Sonoma State for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
