No. T-15 UC San Diego Takes Seventh at This Weekend's Triton Invitational
LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. T-15 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team split two games on the final day of the Triton Invitational to finish the tournament in seventh place overall. The Tritons finished 2-2 in this weekend’s four-game tournament.
UC San Diego (6-7, 1-0 WWPA) began the day with a loss to No. 10 UC Davis, 12-6, but bounced back to defeat No. 23 Cal State Northridge, 6-3, in its second game of the day. The Tritons have now earned victories over four ranked opponents this season.
No. T-2 USC was crowned tournament champion after defeating No. 4 UCLA, 6-4. No. 6 Arizona State took third after knocking off No. 7 UC Irvine, 8-7.
UC San Diego fell behind 8-3 at halftime against UC Davis and was unable to complete the comeback in the second half.
Junior Krista Schneider finished with two goals and an assist, freshman Grace Pevehouse scored two goals with two steals and fellow freshman Taylor Onstott added a goal and two assists. In addition, freshman Ciara Franke tallied four steals.
Pevehouse scored a team-high two goals, sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher tallied four saves and Schneider finished with two assists and a game-high five steals to lift UC San Diego past CSUN, 6-3, to claim seventh place at this weekend’s Triton Invitational.
The Tritons broke open a tied game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Matadors 3-0 in the final period.
UCSD out-shot CSUN for the game 28-14 and finished 3-of-6 on power plays.
UC San Diego returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 17, when the Tritons play host to Cal Baptist beginning at noon.
