No. 10 UC San Diego Tops CMS, Whittier to Complete Four-Game Sweep at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The No. 10 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team won each of its two contests on Saturday to complete a four-game sweep at this weekend’s Claremont Convergence, co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer.

The Tritons defeated CMS to begin the day, 16-4, before knocking off Whittier, 16-2, to close the invitational.

UC San Diego (13-9, 1-0 WWPA) has now won four-straight games and six of its last seven.

Game 1

Seniors Colleen Ratcliff, Kayla Fedler and junior Carly Innis each recorded a hat trick with three goals to lift the Tritons past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday morning.

Freshman Tera Richardson added two goals, while fellow freshman Sydney Boland finished with one goal and four assists. Junior Riley Heiduk recorded a goal and three steals and sophomore goalkeeper Tori Rainone tallied 12 saves, three steals and two assists.

UC San Diego jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter on two goals by junior Halley Atkinson as well as one apiece from junior Chanel Schilling, freshman Robyn Carter, Richardson and Fedler.

The Tritons added three in the second quarter to take a 9-1 halftime lead, before outscoring CMS in the second half, 7-3.

Game 2

Innis scored six goals in the second game of the day as the Tritons closed the two-day invitational with a convincing win over Whittier.

Heiduk added three goals, while Ratcliff and Richardson scored two goals apiece. Ratcliff and sophomore Jessee Ransone also finished with three assists, while Carter, Innis and Boland each tallied four steals.

Rainone was also spectacular in the net, recording 12 saves and three steals.

After leading 3-1 heading into the second quarter, UC San Diego outscored Whittier 6-0 in the second to take a 9-1 halftime advantage. The Tritons added three goals in the third period and finished with five more in the fourth quarter.

UC San Diego resumes action on Friday, March 9, when it plays host to Sonoma State, beginning at 6 p.m. The Tritons then compete in the Aztec Invitational on Saturday, March 10, starting with a matchup against Bucknell beginning at 12:30 p.m.
