Isaia, Manoharan Make Deep Run at Pacific Coast Doubles Championship

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 18 University of California San Diego men’s tennis doubles team of sophomores Marc Isaia and Sreeganesh Manoharan made a thrilling run to the final round of the 29th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship consolation bracket this weekend.

The Tritons duo eventually fell in the final round to UCLA’s team of Max Cressy and Bryce Pereira in three sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Isaia and Manoharan began the tournament by falling in the main draw to Villanova’s team of William Elmore and Tommy Mulflur, 8-5, but rebounded to earn a third-round consolation victory over Michael Blando and Jayson Blando, 8-4.

The duo went on to defeat teammates Adrian Cordova and David Higgins in the fourth round, 6-2, 6-3, before topping Pomona-Pitzer’s Octave Bellet and Avery Bicks, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Isaia and Manoharan followed it up by earning a semifinal win against Gereon Heitmann and Max Palmer of Boston College, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

In other action, UC San Diego’s doubles team of seniors Eric Tseng and Justin Zhang won its main-draw round of 128 match against Jeffrey Melvin and Will Turner of Boston College, 8-2, before falling in the round of 64 to California’s team of William Griffith and JT Nishimura, 8-3.

Also in the round of 128, Cordova and Higgins dropped its match to UC Davis’ team of Everett Maltby and Ivan Thamma, 8-0, junior Richard Han and sophomore Marius Ruh fell to Cal’s unit of Jacob Brumm and Paul Barretto, 8-1, while the Tritons freshman team of Eskil Jarlskog and Neil Tengbumroong fell short against Oklahoma State’s Brady Draheim and Eleftherios Theodorou, 8-2.

In the second round of the consolation bracket, the Tritons team of freshmen Zachary Ermert and Naara Shin defeated Sebastian Alarcon and Bradley Adams, 8-2, while Han and Ruh dropped its match to the University of San Diego’s Nico Borter and August Holmgren, 8-0.

Also in the second round, Jarlskog and Tengbumroong came up short against eventual consolation champion Cressy and Pereira, 8-3. In third-round action, Ermert and Shin fell to UC Irvine’s team of Antoine Barthe and Takeru Watanabe, 8-4.

UC San Diego resumes dual-play on Wednesday, March 7, when it plays host to Hawaii Pacific beginning at 3 p.m.
