No. 25 Tritons Win Series Opener Against Cal State East Bay
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 25th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team took the first game of the four-game series with Cal State East Bay on Thursday night behind a three-run home run from freshman Bobbi Aguirre.
UC San Diego (16-4, 9-4 CCAA) has now won seven consecutive games.
The three-run home run by Aguirre over the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning lifted the Tritons to a 3-2 victory in the lone game of the night.
Following Aguirre's home run and UC San Diego ahead 3-0 on the scoreboard, the game would remain scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when a fielding error by Mikaila Reyes (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) on a single to right field would advance the Pioneer runner to third base. Two batters later, the runner from third would score by way of a single to right field and CSUEB would end the inning down 3-1.
In the top of the seventh inning and with two already down, the Pioneers had runners on first and second by way of a Wampler walk and hit batter. The ensuing batter would execute an RBI single to center field, scoring the runner from second. The runner on first on the same play would get herself stuck between advancing from second to third, and would ultimately be run down for the third and final out.
Baker had her fourth three-hit game of the season, including a double and run scored. Wampler allowed one earned run on seven hits, walking one and striking out five in her fifth straight win and improving her record to 13-2 on the season.
UC San Diego is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch for the first game of the twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
