SAN DIEGO — The No. 11 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team finished an impressive 3-1 at this weekend’s Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University.

The Tritons began the invite on Saturday afternoon by defeating Bucknell, 8-4, before topping No. 19 Cal State Northridge (CSUN), 8-3, on Saturday evening.

UCSD dropped its lone match of the weekend on Sunday morning to No. 5-ranked Hawai’i, 11-6, but bounced back to close the invitational with a victory over No. 20 Harvard, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon.

UC San Diego (17-10, 2-0 WWPA) has now won eight of its last nine games overall and has amassed 11 victories this season against ranked opponents.

Game 1

The Tritons got off to a good start to the weekend by defeating Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Chanel Schilling scored two goals, both in the fourth quarter, to help UC San Diego secure the victory, while freshman goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli recorded eight saves in the net.

After leading at halftime, 3-1, the Tritons pulled away with three goals in the third quarter. Shelby Stender scored less than one minute into the second half and UC San Diego closed the period with late goals by freshmen Grace Pevehouse and Tera Richardson to make it 6-2 heading into the fourth quarter.

Game 2

Pevehouse scored three goals, while senior Kayla Fedler scored twice and junior Krista Schneider recorded four assists to lift the Tritons past CSUN on Saturday afternoon for the second time this season.

UC San Diego scored three goals in both the first and second periods to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. Stender and freshman Ciara Franke also tallied one goal and one assist apiece, while Felder, Schilling and Franke each recorded two steals.

Game 3

The Tritons only blemish of the weekend came in a loss to Hawai’i on Sunday morning.

Fedler and freshman Taylor Onstott scored two goals apiece, while Franke and junior Carly Innis also scored. Junior Halley Atkinson finished with two assists, Bugelli tallied three saves and Franke, Fedler and Schilling had two steals each.

UC San Diego fell behind in the first quarter, 3-1, and trailed at halftime, 6-2. The Tritons attempted to rally with three goals in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Game 4

Pevehouse matched a game-high with three goals, including two late in the second quarter, to lift the Tritons to a victory over Harvard in the final game of this weekend’s Aztec Invitational.

Franke played a big role in the win as well, finishing with two goals and five steals. Schilling stuffed the stat sheet with a goal, an assist and four steals, while Fedler added one goal and one steal.

Bugelli tallied six saves for UC San Diego, which scored three goals in the second quarter to take a 4-3 halftime lead it would never relinquish.

A goal by Franke put the Tritons on top late in the third quarter, 6-3, but a score by Harvard’s Sami Strutner pulled the Crimson within two. However, Schneider’s goal just 19 seconds later made it 7-4 with 4:32 left to play.

UC San Diego returns to action on Sunday, March 25, when the Tritons play host to Western Water Polo Association foe Cal State Monterey Bay, beginning at 12 p.m.
