UC San Diego Junior Divers Brooke Abrantes and Delainey Carlin Advance to Main Draw at NCAA Championships
Release: Tuesday 03/13/2018
by UCSD

GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of California San Diego junior divers and local products Brooke Abrantes (San Diego/Santana HS) and Delainey Carlin (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) advanced past Tuesday's pre-qualification meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center and into the main draw of the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, which begin Wednesday morning.

Divers earning NCAA qualifying scores during the regular season are subject to the competition on the day prior to the start of the actual meet, at the site of the NCAA Championships each year. All four of UC San Diego's men's and women's divers, under the direction of first-year head diving coach Rafaella Suarez, produced the necessary scores this year to get on the plane to North Carolina and participate on Tuesday.

Abrantes finished just outside of the top nine, which is good for an automatic advancement, on both boards, but still comfortably made the field. She tied for 10th on the three-meter springboard (231.00), and placed 11th on the one-meter (233.20). A third-time NCAA qualifier, Abrantes has made the main draw for the second successive year, having last March become the Tritons' first female diver to advance in over a decade. She ultimately picked up All-America honorable mention in 16th place from three meters, with a 17th-place effort in the one-meter event.

Carlin is at her second NCAA meet, and has made the main draw for the first time. She was 19th after her six one-meter dives (219.60), and 29th off three meters (192.75).

Carlin in fact hit both her hands against the board early during the three-meter competition, which is very painful, and still managed to complete that event after getting cleaned up, before producing a qualifying effort on the shorter board to make her first full NCAA field and extend her season.

Out of 43 divers on one-meter, fellow junior Patty Sullivan was 24th (209.15). She was 31st (192.60) among 42 in from the higher board. Sullivan was making her third appearance in the pre-qualification meet.

On the men's side, senior Trevor Jackson (Ramona/Ramona HS) narrowly missed out on moving past Tuesday. He was 17th among 31 participants from three meters (247.60) and 19th out of 32 on the one-meter board (241.70). That signaled the end of Jackson's college career. A former gymnast, he was a four-year student at UC San Diego, but a relative newcomer to the sport of diving, and leaves the program having earned two trips to the NCAA Championships in his two seasons as a Triton.

Abrantes and Carlin will compete in preliminaries of three-meter diving on Thursday, March 15, and one-meter on the final day of the NCAA Championships this Saturday, March 17. Trials begin at 11 a.m. PT each day at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Should either advance to finals, they would take place during the evening sessions.

After the top nine from each board advance automatically to the main draw, an alternating format is used to fill out the remainder of the 18-diver field for the men and 22-diver field for the women for preliminaries. Eight go on to evening finals.

Twenty Triton swimmers, 12 women and eight men, with five of them strictly eligible for relays, will commence their participation at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday morning, March 14, at 7 a.m. PT. All sessions can be watched live online, free of charge, at NCAA.com/liveschedule.
