The 2019 season is Gareth Tomlinson's second as an assistant coach with the University of California San Diego men's soccer program.

During his first season in 2018, Tomlinson helped guide the Tritons to an overall record of 13-4-2. The team made its sixth-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament appearance.

Tomlinson is a 2010 graduate of Azusa Pacific University in sociology, with a master's in organizational leadership from the same institution in 2012. He played for the Cougars during the 2007-09 seasons, aiding them to an NAIA national title in 2007 (20-1-1). Tomlinson also later served as an APU assistant coach.

Tomlinson was most recently an assistant coach at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he helped lead the Sea Lions to one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2017. A final overall mark of 14-3-2 included an undefeated 11-0-2 record in Pacific West Conference (PacWest) play. After dropping their first two games, the Sea Lions reeled off a school-record 16-game unbeaten streak, winning their last eight regular-season contests, before opening their NCAA Championship in the second round with a 1-0 home defeat to eventual West Region champion and national semifinalist Cal Poly Pomona. The Sea Lions were narrowly PacWest runners-up, 37 points to 35, to California Baptist (12-0-1). The 14 wins matched a program standard.

Tomlinson was a member of that staff for four years from 2014-17. His duties included scouting, recruiting, game planning and player development.

In his four seasons at Point Loma, the Sea Lions went 38-23-11, with winning records in 2015, 2016 and 2017. They marked the program's first back-to-back winning marks since 2006 and 2007. The Sea Lions went unbeaten in their final seven matches of the 2016 season, to finish 9-5-4 overall. Their PacWest standing improved in all four years that Tomlinson was on campus.
