LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men's water polo team will play host to six games at Canyonview Aquatic Center in addition to the two-day Triton Invitational during the 2018 season.

The Tritons have 11 individual contests overall along with three tournaments. The season is highlighted by seven games against teams which were either ranked or received votes in the final Collegiate Water Polo Association poll of 2017.

Three of UC San Diego's opponents in 2018 closed last season ranked in the top 10, including No. 10 UC Santa Barbara and No. 8 UC Davis, as well as a home matchup against No. 7 Long Beach State.

"I like our home schedule," said UC San Diego head coach Denny Harper, who enters his 39th season at the helm. "I think we have great games that everyone on campus and in San Diego County can enjoy."

The 2018 season begins with the Triton Invitational, which takes place Sept. 1-2, featuring 12 teams playing in both pools. Among teams expected to participate is Cal, which advanced to the semifinal round of the 2017 National Men's Water Polo Championships.

UC San Diego has hosted the Triton Invitational every year since 1983, and Harper views it as an event for the entire San Diego community since classes won't yet be in session.

"I love being able to host on the opening weekend of the season," he said. "It's become more competitive.

"It's the time of year where it's not as much student-driven. It's more for San Diego and the teams attending. Everybody wants to come out and see what's going on during the first weekend."

Following the opening weekend in early September, UC San Diego heads to the GCC-WWPA Clash hosted by UC Irvine on Sept. 8, before traveling to road contests at Cal Lutheran on Sept. 12 and at UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 13.

UC San Diego then returns to La Jolla for an exciting three-game homestand against Long Beach State (Sept. 19), Fresno Pacific (Sept. 22) and Loyola Marymount (Sept. 26).

"When we play Loyola Marymount, you better get there early," said Harper.

After a road trip to face Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) foe Air Force on Sept. 28, the Tritons return to Canyonview for a conference home game against California Baptist on Oct. 5.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational will be hosted by Stanford Oct. 12-14, before UC San Diego comes back home for a WWPA contest against Concordia Irvine on Oct. 19. The Tritons play their final home game of the season against Princeton on Oct. 20.

UC San Diego closes the regular season on the road with conference games at Santa Clara (Nov. 1) and UC Davis (Nov. 3), and will host two home exhibition contests on Nov. 10 against Sunset San Diego and The Olympic Club.

The WWPA Tournament will be held Nov. 16-18 in Fresno, and NCAA Opening Round contests are scheduled to begin on Nov. 24.

UC San Diego is coming off an 11-14 season in 2017 with an appearance in the WWPA Tournament championship game. Recent graduate Arman Momdzhyan was tabbed Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Player of the Year, while Harper received Coach of the Year honors. In addition, redshirt junior goalkeeper Sam Thompson and sophomore utility Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt were each named First-Team All-America.
