January 14, 2019

Wyatt Harrison - Volleyball

Wyatt Harrison helped lead UC San Diego to its first wins of the season as the Tritons went 2-0 during an East Coast swing. Over the two matches, the sophomore outside hitter led the squad in points (33), kills (29) and aces (4), and was third in digs (11). Against Sacred Heart, Harrison posted match highs with 16.5 points and 15 kills. The next night at Harvard, he recorded match highs of 17 points, 14 kills and three aces. He also added nine digs versus the Crimson which, along with his three aces, equaled career highs.

Emily Beihold - Fencing

Emily Beihold shined for the UC San Diego fencing team at the Western Invitational hosted by the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs Sunday. The sophomore epeeist compiled an impressive 12-1 bout record. Her performance, along with classmate Emma Zmurk’s (11-2) strong outing, paced the Tritons’ epee squad to a perfect 7-0 mark. The first NCAA event of the season for UC San Diego, the Tritons were competing against Air Force, Brandeis, Caltech, Florida, Incarnate Word, Northwestern and Stanford.

Spencer Daily - Swimming & Diving

Spencer Daily started off 2019 by placing first in every event he competed in, as the No. 2 Tritons went 3-0 over Division I foes during a pair of home dates. On Thursday, Daily was fastest to the wall in the 50 freestyle, 100 free, and 100 butterfly individually. The true freshman out of Danville also teamed up for a top finish in the 200 free relay. Daily won the same three individual events on Saturday, in a season-best 45.91 in the 100 free. In the 400 free relay, his efforts helped the A squad touch first in a pool-record 3:04.83.

Kayla Sato - Basketball

Kayla Sato returned from injury after missing nine games to aid No. 9 UC San Diego to two CCAA road wins, as it is one of seven unbeatens left in Division II. Sato scored in double figures off the bench in both contests. She went for 17 Thursday at Cal State LA, with six rebounds in just 19 minutes, hitting a game-high four three-pointers. Twelve of those points came in the second half to spark a rally from a 10-point deficit. The senior added 12 points, three boards and four assists without a turnover at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Christian Bayne - Basketball

Christian Bayne averaged 21 points and made 85 percent (17-20) of his shots over two conference home victories this past week. Against Sonoma State, the senior guard finished with 24 points and three assists. He was 10-for-12 overall and 4-for-6 from behind the three-point line. Bayne totaled 18 points vs. Humboldt State, hitting seven of his eight shots, including all four three-pointers. From long range, he shot 80 percent (8-10). Bayne led the 14th-ranked Tritons in scoring, field goal and three-point percentage, and threes made.

Julia Macabuhay - Basketball

Julia Macabuhay led No. 9 UC San Diego to two more wins over the final three days of 2018, as the Tritons (11-0) are one of just nine unbeatens left in Division II. The freshman point guard averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game, shooting 45.5 percent (15-33). Macabuhay first hit her career best for a second straight game by dropping a team-high 19 points against Humboldt State with five assists and a season-high six boards. She added 16 in Monday's rout of Sonoma State, with six assists and zero turnovers.

Scott Everman - Basketball

Scott Everman was named to the D2 Power Invitational All-Tournament Second Team after averaging 15.3 points and 5.7 rebounds on 56.3 percent shooting. In the then-seventh-ranked Tritons' win over host Hawai'i Pacific, the junior forward netted a game- and season-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 7-for-11 from three-point range. Everman had 14 points and seven boards in a defeat of Western Oregon. He added nine points, eight rebounds and two assists in the final against No. 20 Chaminade.

Haleigh Hatfield - Basketball

Haleigh Hatfield provided her second double-double to help keep No. 10 UC San Diego perfect at 9-0 with an 81-62 home win over Cal State San Bernardino. The junior forward was one of four Tritons in double-figure scoring as they rallied from an early 10-point deficit. Hatfield finished with game highs of 16 points (tied) and 11 rebounds, 10 of them on the defensive end, and two assists. She shot 6-of-9 from the field, with a pair of three-pointers, and made both free throws. UC San Diego is one of 11 unbeatens left in Division II.

Tyrell Roberts - Basketball

Tyrell Roberts played a key role in No. 10 UC San Diego's 80-79 home win over SF State Thursday. The redshirt freshman guard scored a career-high 23 points to go along with four assists and two rebounds. Roberts was 9-for-18 shooting with five three-pointers, also a career best. Over the last four minutes, he netted eight crucial points. A second triple came at 74-74 with 2:12 left to put the Tritons ahead for good. Roberts then assisted on Chris Hansen's trey that gave UC San Diego an 80-76 edge with 1:19 on the clock.

Sydney Sharp - Basketball

Sydney Sharp poured in a career-high 30 points in No. 12 UC San Diego's 102-78 home romp over SF State heading into the still-perfect Tritons' (8-0) break for final exams. The junior guard made eight of 16 three-point attempts, also career highs. Her previous single-game bests were 14 points, four three-pointers and nine long-range attempts. Sharp's final triple to get her to 30, pushed the Tritons exactly to the 100-point mark for the first time since 2010. She added five rebounds, five assists and a steal in 37 minutes.

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt - Water Polo

Sophomore Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored 10 goals over two games at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center as No. 7 UC San Diego finished its incredible 2018 campaign with an NCAA Championship semifinal appearance. The Newport Beach product first hit for a career-best seven goals to lead a 14-9 upset of No. 5 Long Beach State in Thursday's opening round. Turnbow-Lindenstadt added three scores in a semifinal loss to top-ranked host Stanford Saturday, and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Second Team.

Tina Reuter - Swimming & Diving

Freshman Tina Reuter swam to a remarkable school record Thursday on the first day of the UNLV Invite. She timed 2:00.65 in the 200 IM to lower by nearly a full second, the 2:01.35 mark of one of the greatest swimmers in program history, Alex Henley, from March 14, 2012. The Carmichael native won the event by almost two seconds, and completed her sweep by touching first in the 400 IM, also topping an all-Division I field. Reuter led off the first-place 400 free relay and anchored the runner-up 200 free relay.

Chris Hansen - Basketball

Over two conference victories, Chris Hansen averaged 25.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. The 6'7" center shot 59.3 percent (16-27) overall and 57.1 percent (8-14) from behind the three-point arc. Against Cal State San Bernardino, Hansen established new career highs with 29 points and six three-pointers while adding 11 rebounds. Four nights later vs. Chico State, the junior struck for another double-double with 22 points and a career-best 14 boards. He was 7-for-10 from the field and matched his career high with three blocks.

Brianna Claros - Basketball

True freshman guard Brianna Claros led No. 17 UC San Diego to an 81-47 victory over rival Chico State in its home and conference opener Saturday night, producing 16 points and six assists off the bench. The San Francisco native shot 6-for-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Her four three-pointers made (tied), six assists and 32 minutes played were all game highs. Claros also blocked a shot. She has in fact dished out six assists over 32 minutes of action in back-to-back contests. The 16 points matched her best.

Kacper Langiewicz - Water Polo

Redshirt junior Kacper Langiewicz recorded seven goals to lift No. 10 UC San Diego to three wins and a 19th WWPA title in Fresno. He scored a game-high four goals in Sunday's 11-10 championship-game victory over UC Davis, including consecutive tallies to close the third quarter and open the fourth that put the Tritons ahead, 10-6. The San Marcos native had three goals and a steal in UC San Diego's 11-4 quarterfinal win against Fresno Pacific on Friday. Langiewicz was named to the WWPA All-Tournament First Team.

Megumi Barber - Soccer

Senior striker Megumi Barber starred again as No. 6 UC San Diego repeated as West Region champion and advanced to the national semifinals for the first time since 2012. In Canyon, Texas, the San Diego native (Mt. Carmel HS) first converted the decisive penalty kick in the West Region final to secure the Tritons a 4-1 advantage in the tiebreaker after a scoreless draw with rival Western Washington. Then in Sunday's quarterfinal, Barber hit for her first career hat trick, in just 36 minutes of action, to lead a 5-0 romp over WTAMU.

Chris Hansen - Basketball

Chris Hansen returned to action in a big way after not playing since 2017 due to shoulder surgery. The redshirt junior center scored a game-high 26 points, one short of his career high, in an upset of No. 14 Western Washington. He went 11-for-14 with two three-pointers and added four rebounds and two blocks. The night prior, he recorded a double-double with team highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Simon Fraser. Hansen shot .750 and was named to the CCAA/GNAC Challenge All-Tournament Team.

Mikayla Williams - Basketball

Redshirt junior forward Mikayla Williams averaged 30.5 points and 9.5 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to two neutral-site victories in San Marcos to begin the year. Williams scored a career-high 36 points with seven rebounds in a 76-64 win over Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday, shooting 14-for-21 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. The product of Meath Park, Saskatchewan, Canada, began the weekend by recording 25 points and 12 rebounds in a season-opening 75-70 decision against Simon Fraser.

Skyler Munatones - Water Polo

Junior Skyler Munatones recorded three goals and seven assists in two road victories, lifting No. 10 UC San Diego to the top seed for the 2018 WWPA Championship in Fresno, Nov. 16-18. The Huntington Beach native tallied all three goals, two assists and a steal Thursday at No. 14 Santa Clara, before matching a career high with five assists in a pivotal decision at No. 9 UC Davis on Saturday. All five of those helpers came in the first half, the final one putting the Tritons ahead at halftime, 7-4.

Megumi Barber - Soccer

Megumi Barber had quite the day Sunday as the fourth-year senior striker led No. 10 UC San Diego to its fourth straight CCAA Tournament title with her first collegiate two-goal brace in the final in front of the home crowd. The San Diego native (Mt. Carmel HS) opened the scoring in just the fifth minute, before unleashing arguably her greatest goal, among some truly exquisite ones out of 13 for her career, in the 29th minute. Barber had an assist in Friday's 5-0 romp over SFSU.

Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt - Water Polo

Sophomore Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 5:22 left in the fourth period, as No. 10 UC San Diego rallied to defeat No. 13 Princeton, 8-6, on Senior Day at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Newport Beach product's first score closed the Tritons to within one at 5-4 midway through the third quarter, after being down 5-2. Turnbow-Lindenstadt still leads the team with 55 goals.

Gina Cortesi - Volleyball

Gina Cortesi was a major force in UC San Diego's sweep of cross-county rival Cal State San Marcos, a victory that kept postseason hopes alive for the Tritons. The sophomore outside hitter racked up a match-high 14 kills while adding nine digs and an ace. In her first year after transferring from Louisiana Tech, Cortesi has a team-best 228 kills and is averaging 3.2 points, 2.9 kills and 3.1 digs per set. All three of those averages rank second on the squad.

Brett Jones - Soccer

Brett Jones was in on two huge goals as No. 24 UC San Diego swept its final home weekend over top rivals. On Friday against No. 9 Cal State LA, he assisted fellow sophomore forward Jonathan Sabouri for the game's lone score at 84:22. Sunday against CSUDH, with the Tritons down a man, Jones found the overtime winner at 98:37. He split two defenders into the penalty area, and after his initial shot was blocked, tucked home the rebound.

Jessica Rieble - Volleyball

Jessica Rieble paced UC San Diego to a pair of key wins. Against Sonoma State, the junior middle blocker had match highs with 21.5 points, 16 kills and 10 blocks. She added a career-high eight digs, two short of a triple-double. The points and blocks were the most by a Triton in 2018, and her block total equaled her career best. The previous night against Humboldt State, Rieble posted match highs with 16 points and seven blocks, while hitting .500.

Jeff Powers - Soccer

Fifth-year senior captain Jeff Powers scored his second collegiate goal to give No. 16 UC San Diego a critical victory to begin a split road weekend in league play. In addition to producing the game's lone goal with just 19 seconds left in the first half at then-second-place Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, the right back helped anchor a seventh shutout for the Tritons. They fell 2-0 Sunday at defending West Region champion Cal Poly Pomona.

Cindy Tran - Volleyball

Cindy Tran racked up a career-high 20.5 points to lead UC San Diego to a conference win at Stanislaus State Friday. The junior outside hitter registered a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs while also adding four blocks and three service aces. The next night at Chico State, Tran produced 11 kills, eight digs and five blocks. For the week, she led the Tritons in points (34) and hitting percentage (.305), and was second in kills (26), aces (3) and blocks (9).

Graham Hauss - Swimming & Diving

Redshirt freshman Graham Hauss notched a pair of B cuts at USC's Trojan Invite in his first meet as a Triton. Hauss finished fifth with a time of 4:31.10 in the 500-yard freestyle on Friday. On Saturday, the Clovis native and Arizona State transfer's B cut came with a time of 1:39.41 and a sixth-place finish in the 200 free. Hauss also led off UC San Diego's top 300 free relay, helping his squad to the second-place slot with a time of 2:13.86.

Tina Reuter - Swimming & Diving

Freshman Tina Reuter excelled in her collegiate debut at the Trojan Invite, turning in three top-five swims, all of them B cuts in the program's top 10. Reuter's first-place finish with a time of 4:22.69 in the 400 IM bested Division I opponents from USC, UNLV and CSU Bakersfield, and put her fourth at UC San Diego. The Carmichael product also was fourth in the 200 IM (2:03.40) to rank second in Triton history, and fifth in the 200 back (2:03.05), No. 8 all-time.

Nathaniel Bloom - Soccer

Senior forward Nathaniel Bloom tallied both game-winning goals for No. 13 UC San Diego as it remained an unbeaten 9-0-1. Having last scored as a freshman on Sept. 8, 2015, Bloom headed in the 42nd-minute opener against Sonoma State on Friday night, in a 2-0 shutout. He then provided another late first-half goal Sunday against Humboldt State to make it 2-0, in what ended as a 3-1 decision. Bloom produced those goals on his only two shot attempts.

Megumi Barber - Soccer

Megumi Barber produced a goal and two assists as No. 1 UC San Diego won a pair of home games to improve to a still-undefeated 9-0-1 overall and perfect 4-0 in CCAA play. She provided the final pass on fellow senior Mary Reilly's 13th-minute opener in Friday's 2-1 victory over No. 24 Sonoma State. In Sunday's 3-1 win over Humboldt State, Barber's corner kick led to Natalie Saddic's 12th-minute opener, with her 84th-minute tally serving as the clincher.

Elijah Horwitz - Cross Country

Sophomore Elijah Horwitz placed second overall and first among all CCAA runners at the Coyote Challenge hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 22. Horwitz crossed the finish line of the men's 8K in 25:14.3, which was his fastest time this season and only three seconds behind the winner. A native of San Francisco, Horwitz helped UC San Diego earn third place as a team, and has finished first among all Tritons in each of the first three meets this season.

Natalie Saddic - Soccer

Redshirt junior central midfielder Natalie Saddic helped set up both of No. 2 UC San Diego's goals in a 2-0 home victory over city and CCAA rival Cal State San Marcos on Saturday night in the Tritons' lone activity for the week. She was credited with her first collegiate assist on the latter goal, for her first offensive point of 2018, in addition to anchoring the defense to a third shutout. The All-American captain is the only Triton to play all 740 minutes.

Matt Merrill - Soccer

Fifth-year senior Matt Merrill led No. 14 UC San Diego to an unbeaten CCAA start. His first collegiate goal proved to be the winner in Friday night's 2-1 triumph over Cal State Monterey Bay. The stunning strike from 25 yards out came in the 80th minute as he one-timed Brett Jones' corner kick into the upper right corner, off the crossbar and in. The holding central midfielder then helped anchor the defense in a scoreless draw with Cal State East Bay on Sunday.

Mary Reilly - Soccer

Senior forward Mary Reilly scored five of No. 2 UC San Diego's eight goals during a perfect start to their CCAA title defense. She hit for four in Friday night's 6-1 romp over CSUMB, notching a first-half hat trick over a span of 19:27 en route to matching the best single-game output of her college career. The Chula Vista product then opened the scoring in Sunday's 2-1 victory over East Bay. Reilly moved up to seventh on the all-time chart, now at 39 career goals.

Sam Thompson - Water Polo

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sam Thompson totaled 23 saves, three steals and an assist over the weekend, leading No. 12 UC San Diego to a pair of top-10 upsets at the GCC vs. WWPA Challenge Cup in Irvine. Thompson was spectacular in the cage against No. 10 UC Irvine, matching his career high of 13 saves while allowing just four goals. The Villa Park native closed the day by tallying 10 stops, three steals and an assist in a win over No. 8 Pepperdine.

Mary Reilly - Soccer

Senior forward Mary Reilly scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 decision at future Division I and Big West Conference foe Hawai'i on Friday night. It came in the 18th minute, as the Chula Vista product ran onto Michelle Baddour's pass, cut the last defender on her right foot, and shot into the bottom left corner for her first of 2018 and 34th of her career. She is now tied for 10th all-time in program history in goals scored. No. 2 UC San Diego went 2-0-1 on O'ahu.

Jack Turner - Water Polo

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jack Turner made a stellar return to the pool in his first action for the Tritons since the WWPA championship game on Nov. 20, 2016. He totaled 36 saves, three assists and two steals in leading No. 12 UC San Diego to a 3-1 record at its Triton Invitational. Turner's weekend was highlighted by a career-best 20-save performance in an overtime loss to No. 9 UC Irvine. The Fremont native began the tournament with seven saves against La Verne, adding six more in a win over No. 20 Air Force on Sunday.

Maddy Samilo - Soccer

Sophomore Maddy Samilo started each of No. 2 UC San Diego's first two matches of 2018 on the right side of midfield, and tallied a pair of late game-winners to get the Tritons out to a perfect 2-0 start. On Thursday afternoon at Concordia Irvine, her first shot attempt of the year was the decider at 86:23 as UC San Diego overturned a 1-0 halftime deficit to win, 2-1. In Saturday's home opener against seventh-ranked rival Western Washington, the Rancho Bernardo product notched the lone goal of the contest at the 84:00 mark.

Gina Cortesi - Volleyball

Gina Cortesi recorded a pair of double-doubles to help lead the UC San Diego women's volleyball team to a 2-0 record at the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge in Hilo, Hawai'i. The sophomore outside hitter, in her first season with the Tritons after transferring from Louisiana Tech, led the team in total kills and was second in attack percentage, total points, and total digs for the week. Cortesi played in all nine sets, one of just two players to do so. In her UC San Diego debut, she totaled 10 kills and 10 digs while hitting .304.

Maria Mayhew - Volleyball

Freshman setter Maria Mayhew amassed 59 assists and 19 digs while playing in all nine sets as the UC San Diego women's volleyball team won both of its matches at the First Hawaiian Bank Volleyball Challenge in Hilo, Hawai'i. She had a double-double in the form of 46 assists and 10 digs against host Hawai'i Hilo. Mayhew also added two kills and a pair of blocks in that victory. She began her Triton career with 13 assists and nine digs vs. Hawai'i Pacific. In 149 set attempts, Mayhew had zero ball handling errors.
