SAN RAMON, Calif. — University of California San Diego cross country sophomore Elijah Horwitz has been named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Runner of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
It’s the second-consecutive week Horwitz has earned the honor, as he becomes the first CCAA men’s runner to win the award in back-to-back weeks since 2013.
The sophomore finished second overall and first among all CCAA runners at the Coyote Challenge hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 22, crossing the finish line of the men’s 8K in 25-minutes, 14.3 seconds. It is the same course that will host the CCAA Championships on Nov. 3.
It was the fastest time of the season for the San Francisco native, eclipsing his previous-best mark of 2018 by about 11 seconds. In addition, Horwitz trailed Saturday’s first-place finisher by only three seconds.
Horwitz’s performance helped UC San Diego earn third place as a team on Saturday, as he’s finished first among all Tritons in each of the team's first three meets this season.
UC San Diego returns to action on Oct. 6 when the Tritons compete in the Conference Cross-Over in Romeoville, Ill.
