SAN RAMON, Calif. - University of California San Diego senior striker Megumi Barber (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) was selected Tuesday as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 24-30.
Barber produced a goal and two assists as No. 1 UC San Diego won a pair of home games to improve to a still-undefeated 9-0-1 overall and perfect 4-0 in CCAA play. She provided the final pass on fellow fourth-year senior starting forward Mary Reilly's (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) 13th-minute opener in Friday's 2-1 victory over No. 24 Sonoma State. Barber then had a career-high three points in Sunday's 3-1 win over Humboldt State, as her corner kick led to redshirt junior co-captain Natalie Saddic's (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) 12th-minute opener, with her 84th-minute tally serving as the clincher. Four of her five shots were on target.
Barber is UC San Diego's third weekly honoree over the first five weeks of the 2018 season, after sophomore winger Maddy Samilo (Rancho Bernardo/Rancho Bernardo HS) was named the year's first CCAA Player of the Week on Sept. 4 thanks to two game-winning goals, and Reilly on Sept. 18 following a five-goal haul.
Having completed a perfect, season-long five-match homestand on Sunday afternoon, UC San Diego (9-0-1, 4-0 CCAA) heads to North County Wednesday to take on city and CCAA rival Cal State San Marcos (4-4-1, 3-1 CCAA). Kickoff at The Cage is set for 12:30 p.m. The Tritons took a non-conference meeting between the sides, 2-0, in La Jolla on Sept. 22. They play six of their next eight contests, through October, away from home to wrap up the regular season. Their weekend will conclude with a nationally-televised tilt at San Francisco State Sunday at 11:35 a.m.
The Tritons remained atop the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches national poll, also released on Tuesday, having ascended to the No. 1 position on Sept. 25, for the first time since Sept. 2, 2002.
