Tritons Set to Open the Season at Trojan Invite
LOS ANGELES – The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to open their season at USC’s Trojan Invite tomorrow. The two-day event will take place on Friday and Saturday.
The Tritons will be competing against Cal State Bakersfield, UNLV and USC during three sessions across the weekend. The Friday session at Uytengsu Aquatics Center will start at 2 p.m., while the Saturday sessions will start at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sessions are expected to last approximately 90 minutes.
Last season, the Trojans solely hosted their annual diving invitational – which the Triton divers will compete in again this year from Nov. 9-11. USC has not hosted an invite for both swimmers and divers since the 2014-15 season. The Tritons did not compete at that event.
The Tritons’ schedule may seem a little different this year. For over a decade, the season has started mid-October with their Blue vs. Gold exhibition. UC San Diego will still host the event, but it will take place on Oct. 20, following the Trojan Invite from Oct. 5-6 and the women’s home opener on Oct. 19.
NEW SEASON, NEW CONFERENCE
The Tritons are entering their first year as part of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Including UC San Diego, the conference consists of eight women’s teams and six men’s teams. All of the Tritons’ new foes are Division I teams.
ADDITIONS TO THE ROSTER AND COACHING STAFF
Entering his second year with the Tritons, Head Coach David Marsh’s first recruiting class is a diverse group of 25 newcomers that come from all across the United States and the world. Marsh has also brought on Head Diving Coach Liz Sanchez and Assistant Coach Kirk Kumbier, and elevated Marko Djordjevic to the position of associate head coach.
LAST TIME OUT
The Triton men and women are coming off of a historic season. The teams won their 10th-consecutive Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships titles. Following that, 24 Tritons competed at the NCAA Championships, racking up 23 All-America distinctions and 20 All-America honorable mentions while setting two program records.
After the Trojan Invite, the Tritons return to San Diego. The women will host Boise State, San Diego State and UC Davis at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19. Admission to all meets at Canyonview Aquatic Center is free.
