Tritons Defeated by No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona in Reis Cup Match

UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - For the second night in a row Saturday, the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team faced a nationally-ranked team, falling in four sets to No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, and 25-15.

UC San Diego, which was coming off a five set loss to national No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino Friday, dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal Poly Pomona upped its marks to 16-3 and 9-2.

It was the sixth annual Reis Cup, named in remembrance of former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis (2006-09), who passed away tragically in 2012. UC San Diego is now 4-2 in Reis Cup matches.

Cal Poly Pomona led in kills (62-46), hitting percentage (.256-.213), and digs (69-58). The Tritons floored 10 aces, their most in a single match this year. They led in blocks, 10-8, after entering the week ranked 27th nationally in blocks per set (2.25).

Both teams made 10 errors from the service line.

Sydney Tekstra led UC San Diego in point production with 13.5. She had 12 kills and two blocks (one solo). Cindy Tran was just behind with 12.5 points after collecting seven kills, three aces, and five block assists to go along with a team-high 16 digs. Gina Cortesi logged a double-double, finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Maria Mayhew amassed 33 assists and Susanna Limb had four aces.

Cal Poly Pomona's Andrea Bosnic had 20 kills, 15 digs, and hit .341 en route to being named the Reis Cup MVP. Alex Bollier led all players defensively with 25 digs.

The Broncos won the regular season series as they defeated the Tritons in Pomona on Sept. 21 as well.

After playing its last three matches at home, UC San Diego hits the road next week for a pair of conference tilts. The Tritons are at Stanislaus State on Oct. 12 and at Chico State on Oct. 13.
