Tritons Lead Wire-to-Wire in 85-62 Win vs. Humboldt State

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in an 85-62 conference victory against Humboldt State Saturday evening at RIMAC Arena.

Center Chris Hansen hit a three-pointer 53 seconds in to open the scoring and the Tritons stayed in front the rest of the way.

UC San Diego moved to 11-2 on the season and remained unbeaten in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) at 6-0.

Guard Mikey Howell (San Marcos/San Marcos HS) led all players with 19 points, establishing a new career-high. He was 6-for-7 overall, 3-for-3 from long range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line while also racking up four assists. All 19 of his points were scored in 13 minutes of play in the second half.

Three other Tritons hit double-figure point totals including guards Christian Bayne (18) and Tyrell Roberts (13) as well as forward Scott Everman (13). Bayne was 4-for-4 from behind the three-point line and Roberts had four assists. Guard Jeremy Johnson, a first-year transfer from Wisconsin Milwaukee, ended his night with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while forward Eric Patton was the third Triton with four assists, a career-best.

The conference leader in three-pointers per game, UC San Diego made 15 of its 27 attempts, 55.6 percent.

Ahead 34-26 at the break, the Tritons did most of their damage in the second half, scoring 51 points and making 62.5 percent (15-24) of their shots. UC San Diego was 14-for-14 from the free throw line, all in the second frame. With 4:28 left in the game, Howell hit two free throws to put his team up by 25 points (76-51), its largest lead of the contest.

It was the seventh time this season that the Tritons scored at least 80 points.

Humboldt State, which entered the game on a five-game win streak, fell to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The Lumberjacks got 18 points and a game-high eight boards from Justin Everett, while Hunter Johnson had 10 points and three steals.

UC San Diego closes out 2018 by hosting Sonoma State (5-7, 3-4) on Monday, Dec. 31 at 4 p.m.
