UC San Diego's Penultimate Division II Spirit Night Set For Jan. 31 In RIMAC Arena
LA JOLLA, Calif. – One of the biggest Triton celebrations of the year takes place next week with the UC San Diego campus coming alive for its annual Spirit Night at RIMAC Arena.
The annual event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 31 and takes place around the UC San Diego men and women’s basketball team’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against Stanislaus State. The women’s basketball game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff with the men’s contest starting at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Triton women’s team enters this weekend’s road games at Chico State and Humboldt State with an undefeated 15-0 record and stellar No. 4 national ranking. Under the leadership of head coach Heidi VanDerveer, the Tritons are one of just five remaining undefeated teams nationally.
The men’s program takes its No. 13 national ranking and 15-3 overall record into this weekend’s road games in Northern California. The team is led by junior forward Chris Hansen, who was recently named to the Watch List for the Bevo Francis Award, awarded annually to the best small college player in the country.
This year’s Spirit Night event, themed “Paint The Night Blue & Gold!,” will be the penultimate Spirit Night for UC San Diego as a member of NCAA Division II. The entire 23-sport intercollegiate athletic program will transition to Division I in the fall of 2020 with most teams joining the Big West Conference.
Activities scheduled to feature at this year’s Spirit Night include various pre-game and in-game competitions between students representing the university’s six undergraduate colleges, a pre-game tailgate and various giveaways for UC San Diego students in attendance and in-game promotions and activities geared for everyone at the game.
Parking is available in Hopkins Garage, adjacent to RIMAC Arena, for the university’s normal fee. Ride sharing service Lyft is providing fans attending Spirit Night with 10 percent off their ride that day by using promo code “SPIRITNIGHT.”
UC San Diego alumni are invited to enjoy a pre-game event at Hops and Salt, located adjacent to RIMAC Arena, beginning at 5 p.m. Alumni will be provided two complimentary tickets to the basketball games by clicking here to RSVP.
UC San Diego students are admitted to the basketball games free of charge. General admission tickets are available for $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 4-12 and seniors 65 and over. Youth ages 3-and-under are admitted free of charge. Reserved midcourt chairback seats are available for $12 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors. All tickets may be purchased beginning one hour prior to the women’s game at the box office located at RIMAC Arena.
Spirit Night will also serve as the final event of a special student promotion - Triton Trifecta. Students who attended the UC San Diego basketball games on Jan. 19 against Cal State San Marcos and the men’s volleyball match against UCLA are entered to win a beach cruiser bike, courtesy of Pepsi.
The annual Spirit Night contest between the six undergraduate colleges has taken place for at least 24 years. Students representing Eleanor Roosevelt College has earned the “Cup of Cheer” six times, including each of the last three years.
