Nation's Top Squads Compete at Northwestern Duals this Weekend

UC San Diego

EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of California San Diego men's and women's fencing teams are set for action at the prestigious Northwestern Duals, hosted by Northwestern University in its newly-built Ryan Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3.

UC San Diego will be facing 12 schools, six of which rank in the top 10 according to the latest collegefencing360.com poll. These ranked squads include No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 5 Princeton, No. 8 Duke, No. 9 Penn, and No. 10 Temple.

All six weapons - men's epee, women's epee, men's foil, women's foil, men's saber, and women's saber - will be contested.

In 2018, UC San Diego's women’s epee squad defeated Notre Dame, Duke, Ohio State, and Penn.

“The goal is to come out with a strong squad qualified for the NCAA Regionals in March,” said UC San Diego head coach Juan Ignacio Calderon. “The team is ready and we are going to give it all we got on the strip.”

The competition starts at 6 a.m. (PT) both days.

Following the Northwestern Duals, UC San Diego will compete in the NCAA West Regional, hosted by the Tritons at RIMAC Arena on Sunday, March 10. The event will serve as a qualifier to the NCAA Championships at Cleveland State University from March 21 to March 24. Last year, UC San Diego qualified five fencers for nationals, the team's most since 2008.
