LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 23 University of California San Diego softball team is set to host its home opener this weekend, as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State Dominguez Hills comes to La Jolla. The action starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, with game two of the doubleheader beginning at approximately 3 p.m. On Saturday, the first game of the doubleheader will start at noon, with game two to follow around 2 p.m.

Both teams stand at 2-1 entering the weekend. These will be the first conference contests for the Tritons and Toros.

Admission is free to games at Triton Softball Field. There is parking available near the field, but be aware that parking passes are required in order to park on campus on weekdays. There are machines where passes can be purchased in the parking lots.

Last year when the two teams met, the Tritons swept the Toros. The Triton pitching staff was at its best, allowing just six runs across the four-game series. UC San Diego also had success at the plate, scoring a total of 26 runs against the Toros. Danica Kazakoff was a perfect 3-for-3 in the third game of the series, driving in a run to help the Tritons to a 7-1 victory that day.

The Tritons are looking to close the gap in the all-time series record. UC San Diego narrowly trails Dominguez Hills, 50-58.

The series will be live streamed here. Day passes and season passes to view the livestreams are available for purchase online. Free live stats will be provided for all games and links for each game can be found here.

The Tritons previously opened their 2019 season at the Desert Stinger Softball Tournament in Las Vegas. UC San Diego opened the season with an 11-2 (5 innings) win over Concordia (Ore.) on Friday, but narrowly fell to Hawaii Pacific, 1-3, in the following game. After Saturday’s rainouts, the Tritons bounced back with a 10-2 (5 innings) victory over the University of Mary. Brittney Ross-Smith batted .714 and drove in five runs over the three games, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.

Following this series, the Tritons will remain at home for a midweek doubleheader with nonconference opponent Azusa Pacific. The two teams will face off at 3 and 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Triton Softball Field.

UC San Diego earned the 23rd slot in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll, which was voted on by 16 Division II head coaches and released on Jan. 30. View the full poll results here.
