Friday Fun: Triton Fridays Spread Joy and School Spirit Throughout Campus
LA JOLLA, Calif. – With the promise of the weekend around the corner, Fridays are loved by all. At the University of California San Diego, though, Fridays are particularly special. When the final weekday rolls around each week, it is not simply Friday, but Triton Friday.
The UC San Diego Athletics Department implemented the Triton Friday movement in 2018 in order to help foster a sense of belonging and pride among the UC San Diego community. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to wear their blue and gold each Friday to show off their Triton spirit.
For one UC San Diego department each week, the Triton Athletics Department goes above and beyond to ensure a fun and festive Friday. After the UC San Diego employees receive free shirts, pennants, posters, and other goodies, the cheer squad brings Triton spirit by performing their fight song routine. King Triton himself even makes an appearance, interacting with staff and posing for photos.
The high-energy event has been well received across campus, with groups such as the Financial Aid Office, Admissions Office, Alumni Association, and Career Services Center taking part in the festivities. Recently, the UC San Diego Athletics Department celebrated Triton Friday with the Office of the Vice Chancellor. Chief of Staff Cynthia Dávalos expressed why she felt that Triton Friday was both fun and meaningful.
“Participating in Triton Friday was a blast,” Dávalos said. “It felt good to bring the staff together to celebrate our Triton connection and spirit. Throughout the day, when I saw folks from the Administration Complex donning their blue and gold Triton gear, it felt good to know we were on the same page of being proud Tritons.”
UC San Diego students, staff, and fans far and wide can all take part in the tradition by proudly wearing Triton gear each Friday. Keep up with the fun by exploring #tritonfridays on Instagram.
