No. 14 Tritons Set for Big Weekend at Wolverine Invite

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 14 University of California San Diego women's water polo team is set for a trip to the Midwest this weekend, as the Tritons compete in the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invite March 2-3 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

UC San Diego is coming off a solid performance at last weekend's UC Irvine Barbara Kalbus Invitational, highlighted by a victory over then-No. 13 San Jose State, 14-8, on Feb. 23. The sophomore trio of Ciara Franke, Grace Pevehouse and Taylor Onstott scored three goals apiece, while seniors Chanel Schilling and Maddy Wieseler both scored twice. In addition, junior goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher finished with eight saves.

The Tritons begin tournament play with a true road test against No. 7-ranked Michigan on Saturday, beginning at 7:15 a.m. PT. Following Saturday morning's contest against Michigan, UC San Diego takes on No. 21 Marist on Saturday evening beginning at 3 p.m. PT.

The Tritons then face Saint Francis (Pa.) bright and early Sunday morning at 4:30 a.m. PT, and wrap up the weekend against No. 6 Pacific at 11:45 a.m. PT.

UC San Diego (5-9) has already faced four teams ranked in the top 10 of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 25, with Michigan and Pacific being the fifth and sixth, respectively.

Although the team's overall record at this point isn't where they envisioned, the Tritons realize the tough competition will continue to help them improve.

"It's really cool to play such good teams, but close losses are always a bummer," said junior Jessee Ransone. "We're looking to edge these teams out this weekend and hopefully come out with a few wins.

"I always think playing these teams that are competitive makes us better as a team. I think it will help us in the long run."
