UC San Diego 8th, Two Tritons in Top-20 at SoCal Intercollegiate

SANTEE, Calif. - Serving as host, the University of California San Diego men's golf team finished eighth of 16 schools as the 69th SoCal Intercollegiate wrapped up play Tuesday at Carlton Oaks.

UC San Diego, in second place after shooting a 292 and a 289 in the tournament's first and second rounds, faltered in the third, carding a 309 for a 54-hole total of 890 (+26).

Two Tritons placed in the top-20 with Hayden Hui tying for 10th and Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) tying for 19th. Hui was 3 over with a 219, recording rounds of 71, 73, and 75. His 71 in the opening round was the best by any Triton during the tourney. Navigato totaled a 7-over 223, going 75-72-76. Hui and Navigato are both juniors.

Also contributing to UC San Diego's team score were freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (tie for 29th, 74-72-79--225), junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (tie for 29th, 74-72-79--225), and sophomore Ryan Vaughan (78th, 73-80-85--238).

All 10 student-athletes on the UC San Diego roster competed with five Tritons playing as individuals and not counting in the team's overall score. Junior Connell Kilpatrick (77-71-80--228) and freshman Jared Gross (75-78-75--228) tied for 46th, junior Jacob Johnson (77-81-73--231) placed 61st, freshman Ethan Chen (81-78-77--236) tied for 75th, and freshman Sergi Mata De La Barata Barcons (77-84-80--241) tied for 80th.

It was the first collegiate action for Barcons and the first tournament of the season for Kilpatrick.

Sonoma State ran away with the team title, winning by 10 strokes. The Seawolves totaled a 3-over 867, shooting 288-292-287. Western New Mexico finished second and Cal State East Bay was third. SSU last won the SoCal Intercollegiate in 2010.

Will Barnett of Cal State East Bay topped the 87-player field by finishing 6 under with a 210. He fired a 69 in each of the first two rounds and concluded with a 72 in round three.

Brian Whitson (69-69-73--211) from Cal State Monterey Bay was one stroke back in second place and Sonoma State's Blake Bourelle (71-72-70--213) took third.

UC San Diego is off until April when it competes in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational, hosted by Stanislaus State April 1-2 at Turlock Country Club.
