No. 2 Long Beach State Downs Tritons in Three Sets
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Long Beach State, the second-ranked squad in the country, and fell in straight sets Friday evening at Walter Pyramid. Scores of the Big West Conference match went 25-14, 25-22, and 25-17.
UC San Diego is now 7-16 overall and 0-7 in the league, while LBSU improved to 22-1 on the season and kept its perfect Big West record intact at 7-0.
The Beach hit a smoking .450 for the match with 44 kills and only eight errors in 80 attack attempts. All but two of the kills came with an assist. LBSU also led in digs (31-25), blocks (7-4), and service aces (5-2) while siding-out at 78 percent.
The Tritons hit .127 with 22 kills and 13 errors in 71 swings.
Collin Shannon had seven kills and Xander Jimenez added five for UC San Diego. Shannon also finished with six digs, two aces, and a block solo. Logan Clark (Chula Vista/Otay Ranch Senior HS) had two blocks (one solo), Ryan Lew totaled six digs, and Connor Walbrecht had 18 assists.
For Long Beach State, Kyle Ensing put down a match-high 11 kills and TJ DeFalco was just behind with 10. Ensing also had a match-best eight digs and Nick Amado had five blocks.
UC San Diego is playing the two highest ranked teams in the nation back-to-back as it faced No. 1 Hawai'i last week.
The Tritons and the Beach go at it again Saturday at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. As always, UC San Diego students are admitted free of charge.
