Tritons Defeated by No. 11 CSUN in Final Home Match
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Despite matching a season-high with 14.5 blocks, the University of California San Diego men's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by 11th-ranked CSUN Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
Scores of the Big West Conference match were 25-23, 28-26, and 25-23.
The loss in its final home match of the season dropped UC San Diego to 7-18 overall and 0-9 in the Big West. CSUN improved to 12-13 and 2-7.
UC San Diego staged a huge presence at the net with seven players finishing with multiple blocks. Vlad Pesic had six, while Collin Shannon and Xander Jimenez each had four. Gabe Avillion put back three, including one solo, late in the third set. Logan Clark, Wyatt Harrison, and Connor Walbrecht each had two.
The last time the Tritons had more stuffs was in February of 2018 when they totaled 18 at UC Santa Barbara.
UC San Diego was also solid from the service line with two aces and only seven errors.
The Matadors finished with seven blocks and just one service ace with 17 errors from the line.
Unfortunately, the Tritons couldn't get much going on the attack as they hit just .096 on the night, their third-lowest hitting percentage of the year. They had 31 kills with 22 errors in 94 attempts.
Jimenez, who was playing in his final career match at RIMAC Arena, led the Tritons in kills with nine. He also added seven digs. Shannon had six kills and Ryan Lew and Walbrecht matched Jimenez with seven digs apiece.
CSUN held a .230 hitting percentage with 45 kills and 22 errors in 100 swings. Dimitar Kalchev posted a match-high 13 kills and Ksawery Tomsia followed with 10. Emmett Enriques led all players with eight digs.
The Tritons and Matadors conclude the regular season with a rematch Saturday in Northridge. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
The Big West Tournament is set for April 18-20 at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. All six league teams take part with the top-two seeds receiving a bye into the semifinals. In 2018, Long Beach State defeated Hawai'i to win the inaugural conference crown.
