LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 3 University of California San Diego women’s rowing team will go head-to-head with crosstown rival San Diego State this week.

The Tritons and Aztecs will battle at 8 a.m. on Friday, and the races will take place on Otay Lake at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. UC San Diego and San Diego State are familiar foes. This is the seventh-consecutive season that the two teams have squared off.

“This race is very meaningful for both programs and has been for years,” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “When you train in the same water as another team day after day, you develop a healthy and friendly rivalry with them. The coaches know each other, the student-athletes know each other, and there is the desire to find out who is the faster team. Who ‘owns’ Mission Bay this year. This race will also provide a great tune-up for WIRA, an opportunity to test ourselves on a great race course against a fast team.”

UC San Diego is ranked third in the nation in the most recent US Rowing/CRCA Poll, which was released on April 17. Additionally, the Tritons hold second as a team in the latest NCAA Regional Rankings. The UC San Diego Varsity Four earned second while the Varsity 8 rank third. UC San Diego previously competed at the iconic San Diego Crew Classic. Across two days of racing, the Tritons fought hard against tough competition, including some of the top-ranked Division I crews. View the full recap here.

Next, UC San Diego will participate in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The Tritons will race in Rancho Cordova on April 27 and 28.
