LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California women’s rowing team has gained a slot in the USRowing/CRCA weekly poll, moving up to second place. The poll was released on Wednesday.

Previously third, UC San Diego passed the Florida Institute of Technology to claim the second-place slot. With 163 points, the Tritons only trail the University of Central Oklahoma, who holds first with 197 points. The two teams’ Varsity 8 crews had the best performances at last year’s NCAA Division II Championships, as Central Oklahoma took first and the Tritons turned in a runner-up finish.

UC San Diego’s rise in the poll comes on the heels of the WIRA Championships. The Tritons’ Varsity 8 crew had the best time in either DII/DIII/Club heat on Saturday (6:48.734), earning a spot in the grand final. In Sunday’s grand final, the Tritons crossed the finish line at 6:47.670, narrowly edged by Central Oklahoma (6:46.001) to finish second.

The Varsity 4 crew also earned a spot in Sunday’s DII/DIII/Club grand final after an impressive performance on Saturday (7:54.757). As with the Varsity 8 crew, the Varsity 4 achieved a silver-medal finish in their grand final. With their time of 7:37.671, the Tritons only trailed Central Oklahoma (7:28.341).

UC San Diego’s next competition will be the Dad Vail Regatta, held in Philadelphia from May 10-11. Central Oklahoma will not be competing at the regatta, but the Tritons will face No. 3 Florida Institute of Technology there.
