Earning Second in Coaches Poll and Regional Rankings, Tritons Look Towards Dad Vail Regatta

UC San Diego

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 2 University of California San Diego women’s rowing team will travel to Philadelphia this week, racing at the Dad Vail Regatta from May 10-11.

RACE DETAILS

The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, as the Tritons will be one of hundreds of teams from across the country to participate. The races will take place on the 2,000-meter course on the Schuylkill River, and will last throughout Friday and Saturday.

The Dad Vail Regatta is an annual tradition for the Tritons. Last year, the Tritons captured the Henry Backe Trophy as they posted a time of 6:26.729 in the Division II Varsity 8 Final. The Tritons’ Varsity 4 earned a runner-up finish in their race, crossing the finish line at 7:26.654 to finish behind only Barry (7:24.096).

COACH’S THOUGHTS

“We are very excited for the chance to repeat as Dad Vail champions this year,” said Head Coach Colin Truex. “Last year Dad Vail paved the way for us to the NCAA Championships and represented a huge step up in our racing capability. This year we are looking to fine-tune on our last weekend’s performance at WIRA and will hopefully come home with some hardware in both the V8 and V4. This is a disciplined and veteran crew of racers who are looking to finish the season on top. Dad Vails is the next step!”

RANKINGS

UC San Diego earned second across the board in the final NCAA regional rankings of 2019, which were released on Tuesday. The Tritons’ Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 crews were both ranked second in the West Region, and UC San Diego was tabbed for second in the region as a team. UC San Diego only trails Central Oklahoma in each of the three categories.

In the most recent CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, released this morning, UC San Diego also holds second with 164 points. Central Oklahoma captured first, while Florida Institute of Technology rounded out the top three.
