Wampler Brilliant, Bosinger Clutch as No. 14 Tritons Top CWU at West Regional

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – On the first day of the NCAA West Sub-Regional, the No. 14 University of California San Diego softball team earned a 2-1 win over Central Washington (CWU). With the victory, UC San Diego improves to 32-14 on the season, while CWU falls to 33-19.

In the pitcher’s circle, NFCA All-Region Second Team honoree Robyn Wampler was dominant. Pitching a complete seven-inning game, Wampler surrendered just three hits. The Wildcats’ lone run came off of a solo shot in the third. Throughout the contest, the sophomore picked up seven strikeouts.

With the win, Wampler improves her record to 19-6. Her performance was particularly impressive given the caliber of the Wildcat offense. CWU entered the game with a .340 team batting average, which was good for 11th in the nation.

Behind Wampler, the Triton offense provided the runs needed to secure the victory. Danielle Stedman’s bunt single in the fifth began the rally, as the Tritons trailed 1-0 at that point. Maddy Lewis followed with an infield single, advancing Stedman to second. With one out in the inning, Danica Kazakoff laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position.

In the two-out situation, Keila Bosinger came up clutch. Sending a hit into right field, Bosinger drove in both Lewis and Stedman to give the Tritons the lead. Wampler was able to close out the game with a perfect defensive effort behind her, and the Tritons sealed the win.

With No. 22 Chico State’s 7-0 victory over Sonoma State in the following game, UC San Diego is now set to face Chico State at noon tomorrow at Triton Softball Field. CWU and Sonoma State will follow at approximately 2:30 p.m.
