NAPLES, Italy — University of California San Diego men’s water polo redshirt senior standouts Jack Turner and Kacper Langiewicz have helped propel the USA Men’s National Team into the World University Games Semifinals.

Team USA rallied to defeat Croatia in Wednesday’s quarterfinals, 12-11, setting up a semifinal showdown against Hungary on Saturday, July, 13, beginning at 5 a.m. PT.

After trailing 11-9 early in the fourth period against Croatia, Team USA scored three-straight goals to complete the comeback and improve to a perfect 5-0 in the event.

Langiewicz scored a goal in the narrow victory, which was his eighth in five contests during this summer’s World University Games. The San Marcos, Calif., native had a three-goal performance in a win against South Korea on July 3, with Turner tallying nine saves.

Langiewicz also scored twice in a 10-8 victory over France on July 6, and has recorded at least one goal in each of the five games.

UC San Diego head coach Denny Harper believes the Team USA coaching staff values what the two Triton standouts have brought to the team.

“They’re definitely taking notice that we’ve got two scholar-athletes from UC San Diego that are making major contributions to the success of this team,” said Harper. “Historically, it’s all about the UCLA Bruins, USC Trojans, Stanford Cardinal and that sort of thing. This is great and people are noticing.

“Any time you have any scholar-athletes in our department representing United States of America, it’s fantastic.”
