Kayla McCormick was named an assistant coach with the University of California San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs in August of 2019. The 2019-20 season is her first on the Canyonview Aquatic Center deck.
Most recently, McCormick served as the head swimming coach of the La Jolla YMCA Lightning Swim Team from 2018-19.
Prior to that, from 2016-18, McCormick joined the Allegheny College men's and women's swimming and diving teams as their assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
McCormick began her coaching career at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she earned her M.A. in Sport and Exercise Psychology. At Minnesota State University, Mankato, she served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Mavericks from 2014-16, where she helped many of the women achieve Division II NCAA qualifying times.
Before earning her master’s, McCormick graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in Movement and Exercise Science with a double emphasis in Exercise Science and Sport Psychology, as well as a minor in coaching.
The Caledonia, Minnesota native swam Division I at the University of Northern Iowa, where she was a four-year letter winner and team captain during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Twice she garnered Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete accolades, adding the Leadership and Service Award from the league in 2014 along with a nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
McCormick also collected a trio of honors in 2014 with the Lux Award and Women at Play Scholarship from Northern Iowa, as well as the MVC Presidential Academic Excellence Award. In 2016, she received the Jean Freeman Scholarship by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and SUMMIT.
McCormick has worked a plethora of swim camps including: Maverick Swim Camps- Minnesota State University, Mankato; Bauerle Bulldog Swim Camps- University of Georgia; Total Performance Swim Camps- Kenyon College; FCA Swim Camp- Luther College; and Triton Swimming Camps and Clinics- UC San Diego.
In her free time, she enjoys swimming, hiking, giving her time to FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and exploring San Diego. She also enjoys ocean swimming and paddle boarding.
