No. 3 Tritons to Face First Road Test at Azusa Pacific
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 3 University of California San Diego women’s soccer team hits the road for the first time this season, heading north to Azusa to battle Azusa Pacific. Both teams enter the contest at 2-0.

“PacWest teams play very differently than CCAA schools,” said Head Coach Kristin Jones. “Azusa Pacific is a great program. Every game we’ve played them has been tight. I’m glad we’re going to get another game under our belt where we’re getting a different look.”

The Cougar Soccer Complex is located at 605 E Foothill Blvd. Admission for adults is $7, while admission for students with ID, seniors (65+), and military with ID is $5.

The Tritons hold the advantage in their all-time series with the Cougars, with a record of 11-2-1. The last time the two squads met was in the second round of the NCAA Championship in 2016. UC San Diego came away with a 4-2 win at Triton Soccer Stadium to advance to the third round, ultimately falling to top-seeded Western Washington. The 2016 championship appearance was the Cougars’ most recent appearance.
Starting the season with a pair of clean sheets, goalkeeper Angelica Ramos was named both a UC San Diego Athlete of the Week and the CCAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. It was the second career weekly honor from the conference for Ramos, who was previously honored on Oct. 17, 2017 for another pair of shutouts.

Azusa Pacific was ranked third in the PacWest preseason poll with 108 points, trailing only Point Loma and Concordia University Irvine. View the full poll results here.
Following their matchup with Azusa Pacific, the Tritons will head home to play host to Simon Fraser. The Tritons and Clan will face off at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 16. Admission is free.
UC San Diego staff and faculty are invited to attend the contest, which is the second event of the 2019-20 Staff and Faculty Appreciation Welcome Back Series. The first 100 staff and faculty members will receive free Triton lunch totes (with valid ID).

BIG WEST BOUND
UC San Diego is in its 20th and final year playing as an NCAA Division II team. In July of 2020, the entire athletics program will begin a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
