Tritons Stifle Hot Humboldt State Offense for Conference Win
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s soccer team claimed a 2-1 win over Humboldt State on Friday evening at Triton Soccer Stadium. With the victory, UC San Diego improves to 8-3 on the season and 3-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, while the Jacks fall to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Tritons opened the scoring in the seventh minute. The Humboldt State goalie dove to deflect a cross by Jonathan Sabouri, but the rebound went straight to Brett Jones who was positioned near the penalty arc. Jones then sent the ball into the top right of the Jack net. The goal was Jones’ team-best sixth of the season.
Humboldt State netted the equalizer less than a minute later, and the teams entered the second half still at 1-1.
In the 68th minute, the Tritons were able to secure the win. Following a pass from Aidan Cuevas, Cory Daley took a shot from about 15 yards out, sending it past the diving Jack goalie into the left side of the net. The goal was Daley’s first game winner of his collegiate career.
In the net, goalkeeper Pedro Enciso allowed one goal and made two saves. Enciso played all 90 minutes.
The Triton defense impressed, holding the nation’s third-ranked scoring offense (entering the contest averaging 3.00 goals per game) to just one goal. This was just the second time this season the Jacks were held to a single goal.
Next, the Tritons will return to action on Sunday as they host San Francisco State at 11:30 a.m. at Triton Soccer Stadium.
