Men's Water Polo Triumphs Over LMU
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 9 UC San Diego men’s water polo team battled No. 11 Loyola Marymount in another close contest. This time, the Tritons came up on top 14-12 to improve to 16-5 overall and 4-0 in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). Only UC San Diego and UC Davis remain undefeated in conference play. The Tritons have now won nine in a row.
The Tritons could never pull away from Loyola Marymount and only held a one-point lead throughout most of the first half. Every time the Triton’s scored, the Lions would have a response. A Loyola Marymount goal with under a minute to go tie the game up 7-7 at the half.
The Lions took their first lead of the game with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Loyola Marymount would not hold onto the lead for long as Jack Ranj would equalize less than 30 seconds later to make it a 9-9 game.
Back-to-back man-up opportunities put the Tritons up 11-9 with 5:52 remaining. Loyola Marymount scored on a penalty shot to make it a one-point game against. Goals from Konstantin Karlov, Ranj and Hilde-Jones put the Tritons up 14-11 with 1:29 to go. Jonny Rimlinger would score for the Lions once more but the offense could not get enough going to force an overtime.
The Tritons return home to Canyonview Aquatic Center and welcome Santa Clara to kick-off homecoming weekend on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. The following day will be their Alumni game at 11:00 a.m.
