UC San Diego

ROME, Georgia – The University of California San Diego men’s tennis team will be represented at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup starting tomorrow, as Zach Ermert and Sreeganesh Manoharan compete in doubles.

COMPETITION DETAILS

The ITA Cup is hosted at Rome Tennis Center at Berry College, located in Rome, Georgia. The national competition will take place Oct. 17-20. At the ITA Cup, each division features between eight to 16 singles players and eight to 16 doubles teams. Emert and Manoharan will face their St. Edwards opponents at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Featured matches will be streamed here.

COACH’S THOUGHTS

“Based on our last tournament, we need to improve in a couple areas of the serve and return,” said Head Coach Timmer Willing. “We serve well, and we will give teams trouble. If we don’t, we will come home early. I hope they embrace the opportunity we have before us and play fearless and maybe even a little over aggressive. They just need to go after it!”

LAST TIME OUT

Last time out, Ermert and Manoharan competed at the Division II ITA West Regional Championships. The third-seeded duo earned a first-round bye, and then opened the regional with an 8-6 win over their Holy Names opponents. In the semifinals, the Tritons outlasted their Azusa Pacific foes, 8-7(4) to advance to the finals. Ermert and Manoharan battled another Azusa Pacific pair, but ultimately fell, 8-5.

OPPONENT OUTLOOK

Fourth-seeded Ermert and Manoharan will be pitted against third-seeded Chase Bartlett and Anish Sriniketh of St. Edward’s. The Hilltopper pair most recently took part in the Division II ITA South Central Regional Championships. Bartlett and Sriniketh won their first match against UT Permain Basin, 8-2, and their second against UT Tyler, 8-4, but fell 6-7, 2-6 to their St. Mary’s opponents in the quarterfinals.

Both players had success in singles at the South Central Regionals, as Sriniketh won the singles draw and Bartlett reached the semifinals.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Tritons will return to action at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, which will be hosted by USC at Marks Tennis Stadium from Nov. 7-10.
