GRAND CANYON NEXT FOR MEN’S HOOP TEAM

Coach Bill Carr’s Men’s Basketball team will take a 12-day holiday hiatus before tuning up for CCAA action against Grand Canyon, Jan. 3, at RIMAC Arena...The Tritons are now 2-7 on the year after going 1-2 at the Coconut Coast Classic on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Monday, the Tritons pulled away in the second half for a 70-58 victory over Montreat (NC)...Junior guard Robby Peters dropped in five three-pointers en route to a 19-point night while sophomore Clint Allard (14) and freshman Henry Patterson (13) also reached double figures...Allard continued to post strong overall numbers, grabbing six rebounds and handing out four assists...The first three quarters of the game was back-and-forth but a pair of Patterson free throws with 11:21 remaining kicked off an 11-0 run for the Tritons and they rolled from there.

Wednesday, UCSD came up short for the second time against host Hawaii-Hilo, 69-62...This was another up-and-down affair...UCSD got out to an early nine-point lead but the Vulcans rallied to tie things at 32 by halftime...Then Hawaii-Hilo opened up a nine-point second half edge only to see the Tritons storm back on three consecutive treys by Peters, deadlocking the score at 49 with just over eight minutes to go...But that was all she wrote for the visitors as Hilo ran off the next eight points and led the rest of the way...Freshmen Patterson and Darryl Lawlor paced UC with 14 points each while Peters finished with 12...The Tritons shot nearly 50% from the floor and turned the ball over only seven times but were beat on the boards, 32-21, and saw the Vulcans knock down 80% of their free throws while getting to the line 12 more times than UCSD.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RE-ENTERS CONFERENCE FRAY IN JANUARY

The 6-2 Women’s Basketball team returns to action the first week in January when it hosts CCAA rivals Cal State Stanislaus (Jan. 6) and Chico State (Jan. 7)...The Tritons have won four of their last five...Coach Janell Jones’ unit is outscoring the opposition by over 10 per game, led by junior guard Leora Juster’s 20.8 points per outing...They also own an eight rebound per game advantage with freshman Michelle Osier (8.3/game) and junior Hillary Hansen (7.7/game) doing the heavy work...Hansen’s 26 assists are best on the squad.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM TO HOST ALUMNI

First-year Head Coach Kevin Ring’s Men’s Volleyball team will play its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Jan. 7, as a prelude to the Jan. 11 regular season opener against Long Beach State...The alumni affair is slated for noon in RIMAC Arena.
