TRITON MEN OPEN 2006 WITH TRIO OF HOME CONTESTS

Men’s Basketball returns in full force this week as Coach Bill Carr’s squad plays its first three home games of the season, hosting Grand Canyon, Tuesday, and then getting back into CCAA action against Cal State Stanislaus (Fri.) and Chico State (Sat.).

 

The Tritons are 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play...Grand Canyon, which topped UCSD, 72-60, in Phoenix, Nov. 25, is 11-2 while Stanislaus and Chico State are both 3-6 overall but the Wildcats are 2-0 in CCAA action and CSUS is 0-2.

 

TOUGH CCAA CONTESTS ON TAP FOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Looking to build on a solid start, the 6-2 Women’s Basketball team welcomes CCAA rivals Cal State Stanislaus (Fri.) and Chico State (Sat.) to La Jolla this weekend...Coach Janell Jones’ Tritons will be attempting to win their third in a row and sixth in the last seven when they engage Stanislaus Friday...Like Stanislaus, UCSD is 1-1 in conference play...The Warriors are 5-4 overall...Chico State has just one loss in nine outings, is a perfect 2-0 in the CCAA and the Wildcats are ranked 12th nationally.

 

SWIM TEAM TO HOST AIR FORCE FRIDAY

Coach Scott McGihon’s Swimming team opens the 2006 portion of its campaign with a dual meet against Air Force Friday morning at Canyonview Pool...The swimmers will contest the Falcons in an all-relay format...At the same time, the Triton divers will tangle with Nevada-Las Vegas.

 

Heading into the second half of their season, the men's team already has nine automatic and nine provisional NCAA Division II Championship qualifiers while the Triton women have 10 and two respectively.

 

ALUMNI TO PROVIDE TUNE-UP FOR MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

First-year Head Coach Kevin Ring’s Men’s Volleyball team will play its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Jan. 7, as a prelude to the Jan. 11 regular season opener against Long Beach State...The alumni affair is slated for noon in RIMAC Arena.

 

TRITON JAM ON JAN. 17

The fifth annual Triton Jam is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 17 at RIMAC Arena...Doors open at 7:30 PM and the event will start at 8:00 PM...A “basketball carnival,” Triton Jam is an opportunity for UCSD students to meet the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as participate in a variety of contests, competitions and interactive games...The night’s agenda will include the UCSD Cheerleaders, UCSD Dance Team and UCSD Pep Band as well as giveaways, prizes and FREE FOOD...For more information call (858) 534-8460.
