FULLERTON, Calif. - The UCSD Men and Women’s Fencing teams traveled to Cal State Fullerton to face off against three of their conference rivals over the weekend of Feb. 5-6. They returned home victorious with strong wins over Fullerton, Cal Tech, and Irvine. The men won 20-7 over Fullerton, 24 -3 over Cal Tech, and 26-1 over UC Irvine. Additionally the foil, epee, and sabre squads were each victorious in their matches. Particularly significant was the victory for men’s foil. The Tritons went in tied with Fullerton and had suffered their only conference loss to them back in November. This time the Triton foil men had a firm 7-2 victory behind the 3-0 fencing of Cameron Sprowles and the 2-1 results of squad captain John Chung and Brad Elliot. Elliot, after not starting the first half of the season has been filling key roles the last few weeks. In the previous two tournaments he was filling in admirably in sabre, but this week returned to foil to help with a key victory.
The women mirrored the men’s success with a score of 19-8 over Fullerton, 24-3 over Cal Tech, and 27-0 over Irvine. Each of the women squads were also victorious which allowed them to build on their conference leads. Epeeist Heather Stephenson showed great consistency going undefeated for the day. Senior Raelyn Jacobson was also undefeated, which included victories over two of last year’s individual conference leaders.
The UCSD men’s and women’s fencing teams are back in action on Feb. 11 when it hosts Notre Dame, Stanford, Air Force, Cal State Fullerton and Cal Tech at 10:00 a.m. in RIMAC Arena.
