Tournament Overview

The event will be co-ed and limited to the first 45 teams to sign-up. Assuming a full field, there will be five brackets with nine teams in each bracket.

Each bracket will play a full round robin where each team meets the eight others in its bracket once. Games will be limited to four minutes and if the game has not ended in four minutes, the team with the most players on the court will be declared the winner. Ties will be recorded as such.

After the round robin segment is concluded, the top team from each bracket will advance along with the remaining teams with the three best records. If there is a tie for best record in a bracket, head-to-head results will determine the winner. If there is a tie between teams the next three best records, a one-game playoff(s) will occur to determine the advancing teams.

The eight advancing teams will be placed in a single elimination bracket. Each game will be best 2-out-of-3, again using the four-minute time limit. Winning teams advance until there is one team remaining.

Rules

Team Size – Each team will consist of six players on the floor (three men and three women) and up to four substitutes per team. Teams must have at least four players (two men and two women) to begin play.

Eligibility – Only players on the submitted roster are eligible to participate. All players must be current UCSD students, UCSD alumni, UCSD faculty or UCSD staff. Team rosters must be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 22 at 5:00 PM and no changes will be accepted after that point.

Forfeit – If one or both teams do not have the minimum four players ready one minute after the scheduled start time, the game will be forfeited. If both teams fail to have the required minimum number of players, it will be declared a dual forfeit.

Any team found to be playing with an individual not on its official roster will forfeit that game.

Officials – Each game will have one assigned referee who will be responsible for administering the game and ruling on any conflicts or situations not covered in these rules.

Equipment – Six rubber-coated foam “Gator” balls will be used. All players must wear shoes acceptable for play on the gym floor.

Playing Area – The game will be played on one basketball court with the standard “outer court” area for knocked out players beyond the two baselines. There will be five courts set up (one per round robin bracket) in RIMAC Arena.

Game Play – Each game will begin with all players having one hand on their respective baselines (endlines). The six balls will be placed randomly in the center court area. The game begins with the buzzer or official’s whistle at which point players are free to retrieve the dodge balls. There will be no time-outs during games except for injuries.

The team with the last player standing wins the game. In the event that time runs out with both teams having remaining players, the team with the most players standing will be the winner. If play ends and the teams are tied, the result will be recorded as a tie during the round robin bracket. During the single elimination phase, a one-game playoff (four minute limit) will be used to break any ties.

Getting Knocked Out
– A player who is knocked out must drop any balls in their possession and immediately exit to the nearest sideline or baseline, ultimately proceeding to the baseline behind the opposing team. Entering the opponent’s side of the court will result in immediate expulsion from that game. There are three ways that a player can be knocked out. They are:

•    Pegged – if a player is hit by a dodgeball below the neckline and the ball is not caught in mid-air, they are out. The “neckline rule” is void if a player is ducking or in some way making themselves shorter than their actual height.

•    Caught – If a ball is caught by the opposing team before it strikes the ground, a wall or any other portion of the playing area, the player who threw the ball is out. If a ball strikes a player but then is caught be that player or another player on that team, the thrower is out. Intercepting a pass from an “in” player to an “out” teammate on the opposite baseline is the same as catching an attacking throw—the thrower is out.


•    Going Out of Bounds – A player who steps out of bounds or onto the opposing team’s half will be declared out.

Players who are out and stationed on the opposite baseline can retrieve balls and throw them at the opposing team from that position. They are only able to throw balls from behind the baseline, not along the sidelines.

Balls will be declared “dead” and not able to put a player out when they hit the floor, a wall or any other apparatus that may come into play (bb hoop, catwalk, etc.)

If a player blocks a thrown ball using a ball in his or her possession, the ball is “dead” and not able to knock out another player on the remainder of its flight.

A ball caroming off one player is still live and able to knock out other players until it is either blocked, caught or hits part of the court apparatus. Thus, a thrown ball could knock out multiple players but could also hit multiple players and be caught before hitting the ground, thus eliminating the thrower.

Balls Out of Bounds – Balls which pass outside the court boundaries are retrievable by any player so long as they remain within the bounds of the court in which they reside. Players may pick up a ball “outside of their court” by placing only their hands on the playing surface outside of t heir current court. Players knocked out may retrieve balls along the sidelines but must return to the baseline before throwing them. Players knocked out may also not cross over the extended center line outside the court to retrieve balls.

Pace of Game
– In order to keep the game moving and fair, no team may control all of the dodgeballs for more than five seconds. If such an instance occurs, the official can blow the whistle and all of the balls will be turned over to the opposing team.

Substitutions – No substitutions may be made during a game unless a player is injured. Only players of the same gender may substitute for an injured player. Teams may make as many substitutions as they want between games.

Sportsmanship – All participants are asked to exhibit the type of sportsmanship that would be expected at any level of competition. Physical aggression, abusive language or other sorts of negative behavior may be grounds for removal from a particular game or the tournament.

Awards – A perpetual championship trophy will be awarded to the winning team.
