LA JOLLA, Calif. The UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams begin their 2006 seasons this week with a home meet against cross town foes Cal State San Marcos, Point Loma Nazarene and San Diego Christian College. The four-team invitational will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Cross Country Par Course on the UCSD campus.

The Triton women are coming off their best season ever at the NCAA Division II level, placing seventh at the 2005 NCAA D-II National Championships. Head coach Ted Van Arsdale’s squad also finished second at the NCAA D-II West Regional after claiming the 2005 CCAA Championship in San Francisco.

Despite losing the top runner in the West Region from a year ago to graduation, UCSD returns nine letterwinners, including NCAA D-II All-American Emily McGregor. She finished 35th in the country last year at the D-II National Championships and was an All-CCAA performer.

In addition to the nine returners, the Tritons added six new runners, five of which are straight out of high school. The lone exception to the newcomer list is Jenna Kohnke, who transferred to UCSD from UNC-Charlotte where she raced in six events during her two years in a 49ers uniform.

On the men’s side, head coach Ted Van Arsdale returns 11 letterwinners, including senior Daniel Holligan, who helped UCSD to a third place finish in the CCAA and a fourth place spot at the NCAA D-II West Regional last season. The Tritons also return sophomore Kevin Klein who competed as a freshman in 2004 before sitting out last season.

Additionally, five freshman join the team, four of which are from California while newcomer Mike Wright steps into the program out of Ponderosa High School in Rescue, Colorado.

Following this weekend’s season opener, the Tritons travel to the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday, September 9. The SDSU Aztec Invitational follows on September 16 before the team travels to St. Paul, Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational on September 23.

The team will then take a week off before hosting its next two events. The annual Triton Classic Invitational will take place on October 7 while the CCAA Conference Championships return to La Jolla on Saturday, October 21. The NCAA West Regional will take place in Chico on November 4 while the NCAA D-II National Championships are set for November 18 in Pensacola, Florida.
