LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country teams both began their seasons with dual meet victories over cross-town rival Point Loma Nazarene University on Friday afternoon at the UCSD Par Course. The men posted a 15-point victory while the Triton women held on for a narrow five-point winning margin.

The men began the day at and just over 22 minutes later, UCSD newcomer Jesse Morrill crossed the finish line with a winning time of 22:17.8 on the four-mile course. Fellow freshman Max Mullender finished second for UCSD in a time of 22:31.5. After Point Loma runner Noe Castellon finished third, UCSD sophomores Daniel Anderson and Gabe LaMothe finished third and fourth with their times of 22:58.4 and 23:28.7, respectively.
Point Loma had two runners cross the finish line in sixth and seventh place, just a mere seven seconds ahead of Triton sophomore Benjamin Schuster, whose time of 23:51.4 was good enough for eighth place, locking up the team victory for UCSD with 20 points. PLNU had its final two scoring runner finish ninth and 10th, giving them a team total of 35 for second place.
UCSD head coach Ted Van Arsdale chose to rest seven runners on his men’s side, all of whom should be back in action next Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.
On the women’s side, the Tritons had runners finish third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth for a team score of 26, just five points better than the Sea Lions whose runners crossed the finish line in first, second, seventh, ninth and 12th. Julia-Anne Bailey of PLNU finished first in the race with her time of 15:28.9 on the 2.5 mile course, just seven seconds ahead of teammate Samantha From.
UC San Diego juniors Diane Dunn and Emily McGregor finished third and fourth with their times of 15:41.8 and 15:49.3, respectively. Sophomore Ashleigh Montgomery finished fifth with her time of 16:11.8, nine seconds quicker than senior teammate Nina Miller who crossed the line in a time of 16:20.2. Newcomer Jordana Henderson scored the meet-winning points for the Tritons as the freshman finished eighth with her time of 16:28.2.
All 10 of UCSD’s runners on Friday finished in the top-17 of the race, getting the Tritons off to a good start on the season and preparing them for next weekend’s UC Irvine Invitational.
