At the end of the second day of competition, the UC San Diego swimming team found itself sitting in 3rd place in the Women’s meet and 6th in the Men’s. On the women’s side, the 200 Medley Relay team of Susan Bell, Kendall Bohn, Heather Szmidt and Emily Harlan swam to an ‘A’ cut of 1:46.70. Lauren O’Neill, Susan Bell and Aubrey Panis also notched NCAA ‘A’ times. On the men’s side, the 200 medley relay team of Devin Ancona, Evan Hsiao, Jesse Marin and Tim Fuller notched an ‘A’ time of 1:33.14. The Tritons would continue to notch several more NCAA ‘B’ times in all other events. The three-day Speedo Cup will conclude on Saturday in Long Beach.
WOMEN
200 MEDLEY RELAY In the 1st event of the night, the team of Susan Bell (27.16), Kendall Bohn (30.39), Heather Szmidt (26.03) and Emily Harlan (23.12) swam to an ‘A’ cut 1:46.70, placing 6th in the event.
400 IM SR Lauren O’Neill was the lone entrant for UCSD in the evening session, and did not disappoint, placing 12th in the event, and garnering her 1st ‘A’ cut time ever in 4:33.09, ranking her 5th all-time at UCSD. Earlier in prelims, SR Susan Bell also swam to an ‘A’ standard 4:32.17.
100 BUTTERFLY In the championship heat, FR Karla Holman etched her name on the record book, placing 6th in a school record 57.46. SO Jennifer Sims (58.24) and JR Heather Szmidt (59.49/58.52) also placed 12th and 16th, with Szmidt’s time ranking her 6th all-time at UCSD.
200 FREESTYLE SO Shannon Simonds (1:54.75) placed 27th in the event, also bettering her ‘B’ standard set earlier this season. SO Aubrey Panis also swam to a ‘B’ cut (1:55.56) in the prelim heats of the event.
100 BREASTSTROKE In the championship heat of the event, alumnus Rosanna Delurgio placed 2nd (1:02.79), with fellow alumnus Sandra Lopez placing 10th (1:06.27). SO Kendall Bohn placed 13th (1:06.83/1:06.35p) in a ‘B’ time, and SR Emily Starkie swam to a lifetime best 1:08.16 in placing 22nd.
100 BACKSTROKE SR Susan Bell (58.51/58.16p) placed 7th, with her prelim swim being good enough for another ‘A’ cut. SR Emily Harlan (59.14) placed 14th in a ‘B’ cut, while SO Aubrey Panis (59.28/58.24p) placed 15th, with her prelim swim being another ‘A’ standard, and ranking her 5th all-time at UCSD.
800 FREE RELAY In the last event of the evening for the women, the team of Andrea Lippin, Susan Bell, Aubrey Panis and Shannon Simonds placed 4th in an ‘A’ cut of 7:43.15.
MEN
200 MEDLEY RELAY In the 1st event of the evening for the Men, the team of Devin Ancona, Evan Hsiao, Jesse Marin and Tim Fuller placed 5th in an ‘A’ time of 1:33.14.
400 IM SO Steven Hardy (4:08.66) and SO Dan Gluvers (4:10.00/4:09.71p) placed 19th and 20th, respectively, with both times being ‘B’ cut swims. FR Behan Salamati placed 27th in a season best 4:12.94, shaving 5 seconds off his prelim swim.
100 BUTTERFLY SR Jesse Marin (51.51) and FR Kelvin Le (51.95/51.53p) placed 20th and 24th in the 4 length event, with both swimmers recording ‘B’ standard swims.
200 FREESTYLE JR JP Oliver placed 22nd (1:43.93/1:43.09p) and FR Greg Goodell (1:45.79/1:44.70) placed 31st, with Oliver’s time under the ‘B’ standard. Earlier in prelims, SR Tim Fuller swam an ‘A’ standard of 1:40.85, and SR Jacob Dong swam to a ‘B’ cut of 1:43.89. Fuller’s time ranks him 4th all-time at UCSD in the event.
100 BREASTSTROKE JR Evan Hsiao placed 5th in the event with an ‘A’ cut of 57.06. FR Andy Islip (59.56) and SR Jacob Dong (1:00.06) also placed 27th and 29th in the event.
100 BACKSTROKE SO Devin Ancona was the lone Triton swimming at night in the 100 Back, and placed 12th in a lifetime best and NCAA ‘B’ cut of 52.37.
800 FREE RELAY In the distance relay, the team of JP Oliver, Jacob Dong, Greg Goodell and Tim Fuller (6:53.72) placed 5th, narrowly missing the ‘A’ standard in the event.
